And it was hoped that he would perhaps
be sent for by the king.

and they both talked
in favour of Halifax
他们认为哈利法克斯应该接任
and they thought
that Halifax ought to take over.

l think their idea always was
丘吉尔会在哈利法克斯手下负责战争事务,
that Churchill would run the war
under Halifax,
而这个想法对哈利法克斯没有吸引力
an idea which didn't appeal to Halifax.
我记得丘吉尔告诉我
l remember Churchill telling me
当张伯伦请哈利法克斯和他到内阁办公室
去见他(讨论谁接任首相)的重要时刻来临
that the critical moment came when Chamberlain asked
Halifax and him to join him in the cabinet room.

And the three of them were there.
哈利法克斯坐在张伯伦身边,
Halifax was sitting beside Chamberlain,
张伯伦突然转向丘吉尔说:
who suddenly turned to Churchill
and said:
"告诉我,温斯顿,你觉得有

"Tell me, Winston, do you see any reason
why in the 20th century
一位首相不应该来自贵族院(上议院)?"
a prime minister should not be
in the House of Lords?"
丘吉尔认为这是个陷阱
And Churchill thought
that this was a trap.

看不出有理由不行,"
Because if he said,
"No, I see no reason at all,"
他觉得张伯伦会转向哈利法克斯
he thought Chamberlain
would turn to Halifax
然后说,"在那种情况下,

and say, "ln that case,
if the king were to ask my advice
我或许会提议你(来当首相)."
l could perhaps suggest you."
从另一方面来讲,要他说,"是的,我是觉得
(贵族不能当首相)"也挺难的,
On the other hand, it would be difficult
for him to say, "Yes, I do,"
因为那样除了他自己就别无选择了
because then there could be
no alternative but himself.
所以他转过身,站着远眺皇家骑兵卫队阅兵场
So he turned round and stood staring
over the Horse Guards Parade
并没有回答那个问题
and did not reply to the question.
我想这个决定很大程度上
还是由哈利法克斯作出的
The decision, I think,
was largely taken by Halifax
他告诉我在这次会议前一个
或两个小时前他的胃很疼
who told me he had a pain in his stomach
an hour or two before the meeting
他并不真的想当首相,
and did not really want
to be prime minister,
而想当首相的那个人...
whereas the man who did want
to be prime minister...
而且决心很大的人...是丘吉尔
he was quite determined... was Churchill.
那天(5月10日)黎明德国人
扫入荷兰,比利时和卢森堡
At dawn of that morning, the Germans swept
into Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg.
战争终于离英国本土很近了
The war was at last
coming very close home to Britain.
当盟军在为战斗作准备的时候,
张伯伦辞职了
As the Allied armies braced themselves
for battle, Chamberlain resigned
并建议国王委任丘吉尔为首相
and advised the king
to send for Churchill.
(委任)丘吉尔会是个赌博,
Churchill would be a gamble,
当你处于你生命中一个非常重要的时刻,
and perhaps when you're
at a very serious moment of your lives,
赌博或许不是应该做的事,
a gamble is not the thing to undertake,
所以我们都很绝望
and so it was with great despair
当我们在5月10日晚听到
that we all heard
on the evening of 10 May
国王已经委任丘吉尔(为英国首相).
that the king had sent for Churchill.
