engaging and sharing with other people.

Sounds like the right way to be.
遗憾的是弗洛姆还预言
Unfortunately, Fromm also predicted
受重商主义主导的社会文化
that a culture driven by commercialism,
就像当今社会
like the one we live in today,
注定要被"占有"倾向所支配
is doomed to the having orientation.

Which leads to dissatisfaction and emptiness.
想想在1960年时
When you consider that, in 1960,
