The War S01E04

德军沿着峭壁严阵以待
Along the bluffs,
the Germans held their fire
直到第一艘登陆艇颤抖着停下来
until the first landing craft
shuddered to a stop
放下跳板
and the ramps went down.
没等他们走下来很多人就被德军
Many men were ripped apart
by German machine guns

before they could step off.

Hundreds more were hit
in the water.

Some badly wounded men made it
to the waterline, collapsed,

as the tide rose over them.

yards out and we hit a sandbar.

We asked the pilot of the boat,
"Is this as far as it's going?"

And he says,

So he lets the ramp down
and so we rush out the front,

and we go in the water and it's
clear up to my neck like this.

frightened men came ashore

the remnants of the first.

one of the newcomers remembered,

Joe Vaghi did what he could
to bring order out of the chaos,

directing his men, struggling
to clear a path off the beach,

helping the wounded
and the dying.

I was bending down.

There was a corpse
on the stretcher,

and as I bent down,
this shell hit.

Well, when I came to,
my clothes were on fire.

Vaghi was hit in the right knee.

He kept at it,

struggling to remove cans
of gasoline from a burning jeep

Then, the Americans
began to improvise.

to finally knock out

and gun emplacements.

And on the beach itself,
officers and enlisted men alike

began taking their survival
into their own hands.

"They're murdering us here!"

one wounded officer
shouted to his men.
“我们冲进去要死死在那里！”
"Let's move inland and get
murdered there instead!"
沙滩各处
Here and there,
人们站起来开始前进
individuals got to their feet
and started forward.
接着三五成群的跟上去
Then small groups
began to follow.
一个军官跑过来
This officer came up to me
看到我是个登陆指挥官
and saw that I was a beachmaster
我有电力扩音器
and I had the power megaphones
他说“告诉这些家伙离开海滩”
and he said, "Tell these guys
to get the hell off the beach."
而我说“我接到命令
So I said, "Got orders here
你现在就得离开海滩”
that you're to get the hell
off the beach now."
登陆指挥官说“你沿着那条路走
The beachmaster said, "Well,
you follow that path there,
“因为如果走左边或右边
"because if you go
to the right or left of it,
你就会踩到地雷”
you'll be stepping on mines."
有一个士兵他站起来在铁丝网下面
This one soldier, he got up,
and he put a bangalore torpedo
放了一个爆破筒炸开一个缺口
under the barbed wire,
blew a gap in it.
他说“来跟我走” 他带头过去
He said, "Come on, follow me,"
and he led the way.
我赶紧让我们班通过
I rushed my squad through it.
我们离开海滩
We got off of the beach,
我这辈子最重要的事
and it was probably
the biggest thing
可能就是让那12个人离开了海滩
I ever did in my life was get
those 12 men off of the beach.
当德军继续封锁
When the Germans
continued to block the gullies
通往内陆的宽沟
that led inland,
美军向着峭壁猛扑过去
the Americans hurled themselves
right at the bluffs,
爬上崖顶
clambering to the top
从侧面和后面进攻敌军阵地
