On July 26,
印第安纳波利斯号♥把神秘的货物运到了
the Indianapolis
delivered its mysterious cargo
天宁岛的B-29轰炸机基地
to the B-29 base on Tinian.

Then she set out
for the Philippines.
4天后的午夜
Four days later,
in the middle of the night,
灾难发生了
disaster struck.
午夜后几分钟
A few minutes after midnight,
传来一声爆♥炸♥的巨响
there was a loud explosion
on there.
把我从床铺上震下来
It knocked me out of my bunk.
我不知道发生了什么
I didn't know what had happened,
脑海里掠过的第一个念头..
and the first thing that
passed... went through my mind
就是..锅炉爆♥炸♥了
was that a...
a boiler had blown up.
一艘日本潜艇
A Japanese submarine
发射的两枚鱼雷
had sent two torpedoes
尖叫着钻进了印第安纳波利斯号♥船体
hissing into the hull
of the Indianapolis.
把战舰几乎炸成两截
They cut it nearly in half.
船上有1196人
1,196 men were aboard.
最初几分钟里
Within the first few minutes,
其中约300人被炸飞
some 300 of them
were blown apart
或烧死
or burned to death.
船长下令其余的..
The captain ordered the rest...
约900人弃船
nearly 900 men...
to abandon ship.

I estimated I was about
25 to 30 feet up in the air

when I jumped.

I put my foot against
the side of the ship and pushed

and started swimming,
because I was told that, uh,

to get away from a ship...

Within 12 minutes,

the Indianapolis
sank from sight.

The men were alone now,

scattered across miles
of dark, empty sea.

Many men were badly wounded.

Some had broken limbs.

Able-bodied survivors
did what they could in the dark

Morning brought worse horrors.

When daylight
came, you look around,

Just shortly after daylight,
somebody yelled...

yelled out real loud, "Sharks!"

And sure enough, there were
sharks swimming all around us.

And, uh, those sharks
would swim around us,
然后突然间它们会冲向我们
and then, uh, all of a sudden,
they would dive in on us

and start attacking guys.
呃..
And, uh...
你会看到它们攻击一些人
you'd see them attack somebody

over just a short...
just a few feet from you,
它们抓住他们
and, of course,
they'd grab them,

and down they'd go, and you'd
never see that... man again.

All you would see then

would be the water turning red
around them.

They attacked us every day,

several times a day.

Some of the sharks swimming
three or four feet of me,

but none ever touch me.

No one came to rescue them.

Distress signals
from the sinking ship

had been dismissed
as Japanese trickery.
我在水里待了4天5夜..
I stayed in the water for
four days and five nights...
一共一百小时多一点..
a little over a hundred hours,
altogether...
没有任何食物或饮用水
with nothing to eat
or no fresh water to drink.
有些人完全失去了理智
Some of the guys just went
completely out of their head.
甚至不知道他们在哪里
Didn't even know
where they was at.
他们会觉得..脚下是冷水
They would feel that fr...
cold water down at their feet,
他们潜下去喝水
and they'd dive down there
and drink it,
以为他们回到了船上
thinking they was
back aboard ship.

And they'd come back up
and describe...
“赶快下来”
that, uh, "Come on down below."
他们以为他们在船上
They thought
they was on the ship.
“快下来..他们在军官舱房♥里
"Come on down...
at the officer's quarters,
那里的水龙头随时都有冰水”
there's water fountains up there
with ice water all the time."
当海军最终在8月2日找到他们
When the Navy finally
did come upon them on August 2,
只剩下321人还活着
only 321 men remained alive.
约880名船员丧生
Some 880 crewmen died.
我在那里
Some of the things

that I actually went through
out there,

it just seems more like
a dream... sometimes.
