by that time.

And I always looked around
and wondered

Course, we didn't know it was
going to be bad as it was.

watched the fighting from the
deck of the USS Indianapolis.

I set up there
with my binoculars

and watching the Marines
on the island.

And I actually saw
tanks going up...

And they would come down
to the beach

and a bunch of Marines
would get behind the tanks,

and they would escort them up.

And they'd get up
to certain points

And the tank would turn, go back
and escort more on up there.

And one day, I saw,
I guess he was a Marine

just... short distance up
from the beach.

Had his flamethrower going.
It was hot that day.
突然间他停下来转身回来
And all of a sudden he stopped,
and he turned and he walked back
走向海水他取下火焰喷射器
to the water, he took
the flamethrower off
他脱下衣服
and he undressed,
把衣服都放在火焰喷射器上
put his clothes all down on top
of the flamethrower
然后游起泳来..
and went swimming...
游了大约30到40分钟..
for about 30 or 40 minutes...
然后他游回来穿上衣服
And he come back and he dressed,
拿起喷射器又回去打仗了
got his flamethrower and went
back to fighting again.
我猜他觉得自己反正要被打死
I guess he thought he was going
to be killed anyway
所以索性享受一番..凉快一下
so he might as well enjoy...
cool off a little bit.
机场已经拿下可是还要继续前进
The airfield is
taken, and the advance grinds on.
日军在开阔地被抓住
Japanese are caught in the open.
陆战队在太平洋上一场
Marines move ahead in a battle
级别远超以往的战役中进展迅速
that outranks any ever fought
in the Pacific.
硫磺岛战役最初15天就有2050名美军战死
Iwo Jima, in its first 15 days,
has cost 2,050 American dead.
而战役仍在激烈进行！
And the battle still rages!
在美军占领该岛前
The fighting would
go on for nearly a month
战斗还将持续近一个月
before the Americans
took the island.

The Japanese lost
their entire garrison.

Once again, they had never
intended to surrender.

Their mission was to kill
as many Americans as possible

before they were killed

But so many of them left their
blood on the sand on Iwo Jima

and Saipan and Tinian that they
didn't have that chance.

With the airstrip
on Iwo Jima in their hands,

the Americans were one big step
closer to the Japanese homeland.

to attack it at will.

On the night of March 9, 1945,

hundreds of thousands

16 square miles of the city,

of pine and paper and bamboo,

Perhaps 100,000 people died.

were left without homes.
