I don't know why because
I'd been saying yes

and that was the end.

back down the hill.

He was given morphine
at the aid station...

so much morphine that when
surgeons at the field hospital

began to amputate
his shattered arm,

he had to endure it
without anesthetic.

The pain was so intense,
he remembered,

"that dying didn't seem
like such an awful idea."

I ended up receiving
17 whole blood transfusions.
