just hours after the first
American planes arrived,

The Japanese kept coming
all night.

The Marines just kept shooting.

think, over 900 Japanese

So it did our morale
a great deal of good.

For the first time,

Imperial Army had been stopped.

and maybe we won't,
but who cares?"

And you... you learn
to sort of live with it.

or you will not.

The stench of rotting vegetation
and decomposing corpses

clung to the men's clothes,

Torrential rains

jungle paths into rivers of mud.

Clouds of mosquitoes
spread malaria,

leaving hundreds helpless
with chills and fever.

On November 12th,

the Japanese navy mounted
one last major offensive,

and dislodging the Americans
on Guadalcanal.

of American ships steamed in
