And at first,
its workers returned

to making the screws and washers
and buttons,

showerheads and alarm clocks,

toy airplanes
and lipstick holders

and cocktail shakers they'd been
making before Pearl Harbor.

But as the years went by,
the brass industry declined.

So did Brass City.

Ray Leopold came home for
a time, then moved away,

went into business

and eventually became
a fund-raiser for charity.

I had known reasonably well.

He couldn't get over the idea

that someone so dear to him as
his brother couldn't make it...
而某个无关紧要的
and someone who is more or less
第三者却活了下来
an indifferent third person
made it.
战争中有些伤亡人员
There are casualties in war
..他们从没算作伤亡
that... they never show up
as casualties.
他们是内部伤亡人员
They're internal casualties.
我们都变了
We all changed.
我们出征时是一群孩子
We went out as a bunch of kids.
战争是一群孩子打的
Wars are fought by kids.
我们回来时..
And we came back...
看上去也许没变但我们的内心如此不同了
looked maybe the same, but
inside we were so different.
我想他们觉得我们都怪里怪气的
They thought we were
just odd, I guess.
