Then a hail of enemy
fire pins him down

and forces him back to
his earlier position,

but it doesn't stop the captain

about to defend the base.

The supply room still
encroached on by flame

finally ignites the ammunition.

The explosion
sends Donlon flying

as shrapnel pierces his leg.

Donlon picks himself up

and continues to lead his men.

The insurmountable
odds are unavoidable

and Captain Donlon orders
his men to fall back

and gives them
cover with his AR15.

When he sees the
wounded "Pop" Alamo

The flare ship was

but it finally got
over the target at 0430

entire camp ablaze.
