closer to the Wall,

I don't like names
on things like that

'cause it started I
remember seeing it done

in Virginia as one of
the first that have

one with everybody's name on it,

and because you
leave people off,

and you make mistakes, and
you put people on there

who weren't killed action,

whatever the criteria are,

and then you end up
spending all the time,

they're still putting names
on the wall in Vietnam.

- Well, just like
everything else,

everything's got a memorial.

I thought it was one
of the best things

they ever did.

I wasn't concerned about being

a big black piece of granite.

The names on there, if
you've ever been there,

and touched that wall,

and you seen some of your
friends' names on it,

it came to life.

You saw your reflection in it.

You've seen what happened,

how you're still on the
other side of that wall,

and all those guys that
are not on the other side.

Within the memorial,

is sculptor Frederick
Hart's lifelike statue,

the Three Soldiers, of a
trio of Vietnam soldiers.

On November 13, 1982, the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial
1982年11月13日越战纪念碑
is formally dedicated.

- We're gathered today just
as we have gathered before
我们今天像以往一样齐聚一堂
to remember those who served,
是为了纪念那些做过贡献的人
those who fought, and
those still missing,
战斗过以及仍然失踪的人
and those who gave
their last full measure
那些为了我们祖国
of devotion for our country.

We're gathered at
a monument on which

the names of our fallen
friends and loved ones

are engraved, and with
crosses instead of diamonds

beside them, the names
of those whose fate

we do not yet know.

One of those who
fell wrote shortly

before his death these words,

"Take what they have left
and what they have taught you

"with their dying, and
keep it with your own.

"And take one moment to
embrace those gentle heroes
“花一分钟时间拥抱”
"you left behind."

- I've found all the
names of the people
我发现所有人的名字
that were there,
and that I lost,
都在那里我迷失了
and it's a long list.

- [Voiceover] The
memories of fallen women
越战女子纪念碑
in the Vietnam War remained
left behind until 1993
一直到1993年才建成
with the dedication of the
Vietnam Woman's Memorial.

- I refused to go
to the dedication.
我不肯去捐款
I went up there for
the first anniversary,
我去那里参加第一次周年纪念
and I was shocked and
overpowered by it.
我很震惊完全为之折服
I was really impressed
of what it was.
我对它感到非常震动
I love it now.
我现在喜欢了
She did a very good job,
这非常好
and I really am glad
that she did it.
我很高兴建成了这座纪念碑
- I think it's a good idea.

I mean, I've been to that
memorial several times,
我去那里参观过很多次
and it makes me feel better.

It makes me feel good.

It's a healing process.

- Across a class, and it's
the beginning of the class,

and they have the
Pledge ofAllegiance,

and you'll see everybody
stand up for maybe two guys

that sit there, don't get up,
那两个人坐在那儿没起来
and you would like to go
over and shake the guy,
你很想走过去握住那人的手
and say, "Do you know
what I sacrificed
说“你知道我做出了怎样的牺牲”
"for you to be here
in this country
“你才能站立在”
"that you could stand
up?", but you can't.
“这个国家？” 但你不能
You start to wonder what
are our laws involving?
你开始思考我们的法律是干什么用的？
Are we going one way
and not the other way?
我们是不是走了一条路而没有走另外一条？
What I mean by that is
when I was growing up
我的意思是说当我长大
and being a kid you always
stood up for the flag,
站立在你一直拥护的旗帜面前
you honored the flag, you
honored your veterans,
你尊重这面旗帜你尊重老兵
and everything else.
以及其他的一切
Today a lot of these students
figure they have rights
今天很多学生认为他们有权利
that they don't have to do that.
不必那么做
But the bottom line is
that rights that you have,
但关键是你所拥有的权利
who gave you those rights?
是谁给予的？
It's the veterans who
made the sacrifices
正是老兵们做出的牺牲
so you can have that
right not to stand up.
你才有权利坐在那儿
- [Voiceover] How is
Vietnam remembered
40年后的今天
this 40 years later?
是如何记住这场战争的？
- First of all, in
the history books,
首先在历史书上
there's not much about it.
没有多少相关内容
Not many people teach it.
也没有多少人教
There is now in colleges,
and maybe high schools
现在大学里有了
might have a little bit,
高中可能也有一点
there's a little bit
more of the legacy.
而且比以前多了
It's just like Korea.
就像朝鲜战争一样
Nobody really talked
too much about that.
