the word is short, but not so short as sweet;

pardon is all the suit I have in hand.
我只求您饶恕我儿
I pardon him,

as God shall pardon me.

thoughts tending to ambition,

they do plot unlikely wonders;

how these vain weak nails

may tear a passage through the flinty ribs of this hard world,
或许能在我凹凸不平的囚室墙上撕个口子
my ragged prison walls,
穿通这坚实的石墙
and, for they cannot, die in their own pride.

Thoughts tending to content
想法总是自我满足
flatter themselves
自以为是
that they are not the first of fortune's slaves,
安慰自己说命运也曾奴役他人
nor shall not be the last;
日后也还会有这种事
like silly beggars
像愚蠢的乞丐
who sitting in the stocks refuge their shame,
坐在一堆破烂里逃避这耻辱
that many have and others must sit there;
想着以前也有不少人像他一样
and in this thought they find a kind of ease,
这个念头给他们以宽慰
bearing their own misfortune
把自己的不幸遭遇
on the back of such as have before endured the like.
丢给曾有相同境遇的人去承受
Thus play I in one person many people,
这样我一个人扮了多个角色
and none contented:
却都心有不甘
sometimes am I king;
有时我是国王
then treasons make me wish myself a beggar,
而背叛让我宁可自己是个乞丐
and so I am,
于是我成了乞丐
then crushing penury persuades me I was better when a king;
贫穷却压得我更想做个国王
then am I kinged again and
我又是国王了
by and by think that I am unkinged by Bolingbroke,
但渐渐想起我已被波林勃洛克废黜
and straight am nothing:
于是我什么都不是了
but whate'er I be,
可是无论我是什么人
nor I nor any man that but man is
不论我什么身份只要是个人
with nothing shall be pleased,
就不能感到宽心
till he be eased with being nothing.
除非能安于做个贫贱之人
Music do I hear?
这是乐声吗
Keep time.
注意拍子
How sour sweet music is,
美妙的音乐竟能如此讨厌
when time is broke and no proportion kept!
只因打乱了拍子音色失和
So is it in the music of men's lives.
人生的音乐亦是如此
I wasted time,
我曾虚度光阴
and now doth time waste me.
而现在时光的洪流将把我卷走
This music mads me; let it sound no more;
这音乐让我发狂快停下吧
for though it have holp madmen to their wits,
音乐虽能帮疯子恢复理智
in me it seems it will make wise men mad.

Yet blessing on his heart that gives it me!

For 'tis a sign of love;

is a strange brooch in this all-hating world.
