driving at full throttle towards Berlin.

The ground is shaking.

It was such a powerful artillery barrage that, uh, it really tore up the land.

Result of all of this is that Zhukov gets bogged down on the first day,

and he blows his plan to hell.

When the news that the attack on the Seelow Heights

hasn't gone to plan gets back to Moscow,
朱可夫接到了一个电♥话♥
Zhukov takes a phone call.

And Stalin rings him and says,

"So you underestimated the German defenses?"

"I wonder who's gonna make it to Berlin now."

And at the same time Stalin rings up Marshal Konev, Zhukov's rival,

and says, "So, have you heard?"

He's ringing them to encourage them, to goad them, to tease them.

Pitting one person against another.

"Well, I bet you could get there first. What if Zhukov gets there first?"

"I mean, you're gonna feel a bit of a Charlie, aren't you?"

Emboldened by the news that Zhukov has stalled,
他冲过了一片林区 取得了领先
Konev makes a dash through an area of woodland and gets ahead.
而这时斯大林又说
This is where Stalin then says,
“好了 朱可夫 到底是怎么回事”
"All right, Zhukov, what the hell's going on?"
“你还打不打柏林了 你为什么还不前进”
"Are you gonna make it to Berlin or not? Why aren't you moving?"
对朱可夫的部队来说很不幸
Unfortunately for Zhukov's forces,
他抢在科涅夫前到达柏林的唯一办法
his only way to beat Konev now to Berlin
就是用蛮力冲破德军防线
is to batter through German forces with brute-force.
刺♥激♥奏效了 因为朱可夫接下来下令
The goading works because Zhukov then orders
不顾任何坦克战的规则
a storming of the Seelow Heights
强行猛攻施劳弗高地
against all the rules of sort of tank warfare.

And he loses 30,000 men.

Thirty thousand losses.
但他冲过去了
But he gets through.

Zhukov's ruthless tactics bring him neck and neck with Konev,

as the armies reach the city suburbs.

Stalin's prize is nearly within his clutches.

And now, at the final hurdle,

he gets word that the Western Allies have reached the River Elbe to the west of Berlin

and have decided to push no further.

The Allied Commander in the west, Dwight Eisenhower,

has made his career with calm, measured decisions.

So he makes the decision not to force his way through to Berlin

in order to save Allied lives.

saying it's gonna cost 100,000 troops to take the city."

And this causes huge consternation, particularly in the British camp,

because Churchill and many others are still determined to go for Berlin.

who value the lives of their young men.

Stalin decides he won't take any chances.

On the 25th of April, 1945,

the Russians link up with the Western Allies for the first time.
