Britain's darkest hour.
Military failure in Norway
has led to the fall of the prime minister, Neville Chamberlain.
The House of Commons has insisted that Winston Churchill take over.
But Churchill has many enemies,
including members of his own Conservative Party
and the Foreign Office,
who want Britain to make peace with Adolf Hitler.
One of Churchill's greatest challenges was undoubtedly
encouraging the War Cabinet to keep fighting.
On the same day that Churchill becomes prime minister,
Germany invades France.
The British Expeditionary Force is sent to help the French.
But Churchill worries the French lack the will to fight.
If France surrenders and the Expeditionary Force is captured,
many Americans believe that Britain will be finished.
Without American support,
Hitler's 1,000-Year Reich will reign supreme over Europe.
So, the war would've been over for Britain,
and we probably would be living in a world so different today
we wouldn't even recognize it.
As the French Army falls back,
the British are cut off and surrounded
at the port of Dunkirk.
All is lost.
If the British Expeditionary Force would not pull back,
they would either be captured or slaughtered.
And that would have been the end of the war.
This is the incredible story of how Churchill fought on against Hitler
and so continued with the Allies to victory.
第 1 集 敦刻尔克
On the 1st of September, 1939,
Germany invades Poland.
Britain is at war.
The government responds by sending the British Expeditionary Force,
the BEF, to France.
And now, the first pictures of the embarkation of the BEF.
Never before has an army set out from the front to fight for a more just cause.
Never before have men been more determined to win.
More than 152,000 soldiers set sail to join their French counterparts on the Franco-Belgian border.
Once there, they dig in,
and wait for the Germans to attack.
And they're waiting for something to happen.
Although they knew it was going to start, waiting made them really complacent.
And still, they go on waiting.
Already by this stage, the, uh, war was being called the Phoney War.
Um, some called it the Bore War because it was boring.
So they need to be kept busy. There's training going on.
People are going back for Christmas, going back on leave.
You know, there was a lot of football played. Um…
It could be, you know, entertainments,
uh, where people come and... and put on acts and put on shows.
So you have this ridiculous situation where everyone is wandering around,
going, "I thought we were at war, but no one seems to be fighting anything."
But war is coming.
By January 1940,
German generals have formulated a plan of attack on Western Europe.
But Hitler suddenly stalls the invasion,
forcing the Allies to continue to wait.
There is a disagreement between Hitler and his generals
about how best to attack France.
The maverick General Heinz Guderian
strongly advocates sending tanks through the Ardennes,
a densely forested and hilly region
made up of a narrow, winding network of roads
thought to be impassable for tanks.
Once through, the tanks would rush to the channel,
cutting the British Army off from the French.
But it's too radical for the German High Command,
who reject the plan.
Until on the 10th of January,
a German plane carrying a military officer is flying to Cologne.
It crash-lands in a field outside the Belgian town of Mechelen.
On the plane are top secret documents
for Hitler's plan for the invasion of Western Europe.
The secret plans, which are now in the hands of the Allies,
reveal the Germans will invade Holland and Belgium from the north
before sweeping into France.
Hitler's immediate reaction to discovering the plans for the invasion of France
had been discovered would have been one of absolute fury.
As a result, he went back to what was a much riskier plan
that the, uh, Army commanders had rejected at first,
which is going through the Ardennes Forest and attacking the French at their weakest.
They go over to something which is much more audacious, much more risky,
but which absolutely sets the scene for the war that's coming.
On the 10th of May, 1940,
the Germans unleash their forces on Western Europe.
The assumption among the Allies is the attack is bound to come through Belgium,
and that's why the Allies had put the cream of their forces,
both the French and the British Armies, on the border with Belgium.
So the main thrust looks like it's coming through the low countries,
but in actual fact, the main thrust is going through the Ardennes.
And frankly, to the French and the British, they must've seen the Ardennes in particular
as an impassible object for tanks, for armored columns.
从后勤上来说 你要如何 才能让大军通过那个地区
You know, logistically, how could you really move an army through that location?
And what the Germans did very cleverly is not just come through the Ardennes,
which was the sneak surprise attack,
but they also advanced troops into Belgium itself.
换句话说 他们装作认为盟军 在虚张声势 而盟军也上当了
In other words, they called the, uh, Allies' bluff, and the Allies took the bait.
The Germans pummeled through the seemingly impassable Ardennes,
using a technique never seen before on the battlefield.
Blitzkrieg, a rapid thrust towards an enemy's weak spot
using an onslaught of sheer power.
Fast tanks, mobile infantry,
and overwhelming air support.
This was the first, you know, real use of, you know, armored blitzkrieg
in... in world history.
The Germans called it Bewegungskrieg, the war of movement,
meaning you hit him hard as quickly as you can
and you just smash through.
You annihilate the enemy so they can't kind of collect themselves.
So, what does this do? It creates panic.
The material effect of blitzkrieg
is to open up, uh, an enemy force to a real danger.
The moral effect is to create complete dislocation on the part of your enemy.
It's almost like a conjuring trick.
The architect of the plan, General Heinz Guderian,
leads the German Panzer Divisions through the Ardennes.
General Guderian had a very simple motto that doesn't translate into English,
but it basically means "Use the big guns."
"Don't do anything piecemeal."
He was impulsive,
and he was a great expert on tank warfare.
Guderian and his divisions worked closely with the Luftwaffe
to smash through the Ardennes,
cross the Meuse River, and overrun the Allies,
reaching Northern France in just a matter of days.
