He wasn't.
一切始于几年前的新墨西哥
This all started years ago in New Mexico.
特洛伊搬到这个小镇开了个教会
[Ainsworth] Troy moves into this town and starts a church there...
开始让所有当地人都来
and started getting all of the local people going.

It's a very small town. A lot of poverty there.

He finds this young boy that doesn't have a father.
牧师遇见马修时他还是个野孩子
When the pastor met Matthew, he was just an aimless kid.

Impressionable. I mean, the pastor probably thought

I can take him under my wing. I can manipulate him.

[Ainsworth] And this young boy watches him and looks at him

as a father figure maybe, sees him as he's growing up.

Maybe he wants to be like him.

Along unfamiliar paths, I will guide them.

[Ainsworth] He's prime material for somebody that's gonna manipulate him.

"Come to me. I'm your dad. I'll take care of you.
我教你一门手艺我会给你找个好妻子”
I'll teach you a trade. I'll find you a wife."

How does it get better than that?
马修观察着牧师在做的事
Matthew was observing what the pastor was doing
他想为自己的生活找到更好的出路
and finding ways to better his own life.
所以他学了这门手艺并对此非常精通
[Ainsworth] So he learned a trade and he learned it very, very well.

I think he was amazed by the power.

I think he might've been surprised by the power,

but then he realized I can get anything I want. I can do anything I want.

I think what happened with his wife and Matthew, he deserved it.

Being religious myself, there's absolute poetic justice in that.

And I think a lot of people really misunderstand what faith is.

Everybody forgot what this is all about. It became the Matthew show.

Everybody forgot why we were all doing this.

But we didn't forget.
