Every year in the spring,

a country born from the ashes

Today, around half the Jews
in the world live here in Israel.

I've always thought
that Israel is the consummation

of some of the highest
ethical values

of Jewish tradition and history.

But creating a place of safety
and defending it

has sometimes challenged

I was born in 1945.
我生于1945年
Before I was out of short trousers,
10来郎当岁的时候
I knew about those other boys,
我就听说了他国同龄犹太男孩的悲剧
the boys of the ghettos and camps,

the ones who never got
to be Bar Mitzvahed.

My Bar Mitzvah party was
just around the corner from here.

Back then, I hadn't heard
of Szmul Zygielbojm,
当时的我还没听说过Szmul Zygielbojm这个名字
a Polish Jew who lived
in this part of west London
从1942年春到1943年春
between the springs
of 1942 and 1943,
这位波兰犹太人就住在伦敦西部的这个角落
the year when three million
other Polish Jews were murdered.

Zygielbojm had escaped
from the Warsaw Ghetto

charged with the grave mission
of alerting the Allies

to the brutal mistreatment of Jews
in occupied Europe...

that followed Nazi arrival,

a wholesale annihilation.

He spent 18 months in America

addressing rallies, trying to rouse
the conscience of politicians

now that information
about the Nazis' extermination plans

was becoming irrefutable,

and all to little effect.

Then Zygielbojm went back to Britain
and spoke on the BBC,
后来Zyielbojm转战英伦，并在BBC发声
saying things
you don't usually hear on the BBC.

He said this - "It would be a crime
and a disgrace to go on living,
他说:"如果世人再不立即行动起来，"
"to belong to the human race

"unless immediate action is taken

"to stop the greatest crime
ever known to human history."

In April 1943, an SS operation
to liquidate the Warsaw Ghetto
1943年4月， 纳粹党卫军铲平华沙隔都的行动
ran into fierce,
armed Jewish resistance...
遭到武装犹太人的猛烈抵抗
..the first major rising against
Nazi rule in occupied Europe.
这是纳粹占领下的欧洲首见的大型起义
It took the SS a month to crush it.
党卫军花了一个月才将其镇♥压♥
Many of the leaders of the uprising

were Zygielbojm's friends
and comrades.
大多是Zygielbojm的同志和朋友
And among those who perished
were Zygielbojm's wife and son.

At exactly the same time,

British and American diplomats
were meeting in Bermuda

to discuss the plight
of wartime refugees.

The words "Jew" and "Jewish"
were banned from the proceedings.
但是，所有与"犹太"相关的内容都被与会者拒之门外
After ten days of talk,
10天的会谈之后
the Allies decided to do...nothing.
盟国决定对犹太难民采取的行动是: 零 ！
But Szmul Zygielbojm acted.
不过Szmul Zygielbojm没闲着
He wrote a letter
to the Polish government in exile
他向波兰流亡政♥府♥和全世界
and to the world, saying,
写信称:
"My comrades fell with their arms
in their hands.
"我的战友们至死枪不离手"
"It was not permitted to me
to join them,
"可我却未获准与之并肩作战"
"but I belong to their mass grave."
"但我终将与他们魂归一处"
The Holocaust put paid to the idea
大屠♥杀♥终结了犹太人的一切幻想
that when facing annihilation,
面对各种时期的各种屠刀
the Jews had any reason to expect
much in the way of protection,
别指望任何人向犹太人施援
succour or asylum from anyone.
至于救助与庇护更是镜花水月
Expressions of concern, yes,
除了口头关切以外
but not what you'd actually call
saving lives.
拯救生命的义举可谓寥寥
So it was not just
what the Nazis did to the Jews,
所以，犹太复国的道德依据之中，
but what everyone else failed to do
除了纳粹暴行
that made the moral case for Israel.
更多的是时人的冷眼旁观
For the Jews who had somehow
survived the Holocaust,
对于大屠♥杀♥中幸存下来的那些犹太人来说
this is what salvation looked like

in the years immediately
after the Second World War...
二战硝烟甫散之年
..the coastline of Palestine.

They came here
in their tens of thousands

on dangerously overcrowded
rust-bucket ships,
运载他们的船只锈迹斑斑，还极度超载
a desperate exodus from the
blood lands of central Europe
可是人人迫切希望逃离欧洲地狱
where two-thirds of Jews
had been wiped out.
那里，原先三分二的犹太人口已经化为灰烬
There was no returning
to that continent of phantoms.
曾经的家园早已是孤魂野鬼之地，再也回不去了...
Some who tried to go back
to what had been their homes
有些波兰和罗马尼亚犹太人逃出集中营后
in Poland or Romania
were harassed, assaulted,

But Palestine
didn't want them either.

Since the end of
the First World War,

it had been controlled
by the British,

who for decades
had struggled to keep a lid

on a vicious inter-communal war
between the Arabs and the Jews.

The sudden influx of tens
of thousands of Jews was,

from the British perspective,

chaos inside Palestine

ships, put onto cattle trucks,
