There was an opportunity to work with him and in the team that had built the school,

It wasn't a formalized company.

And then the school opened, and then what?
整个团队需要继续做些什么
The whole team needed something to do next.

So they were looking for work and trying to connect all the dots.
我记得是我回到巴厘的那个月
I think the month that I got back to Bali,
他们正在开始建第一座房♥子
they were breaking ground on the first house.
当时团队的管理者中
And of the people involved in managing the team at that time,
我是唯一一个出席那次动工仪式的
I'm the only one who showed up at that ceremony,
我应该把它当成一次警告的
which I should have taken as a warning sign.
因为很快整个团队和整个工程项目
Because pretty soon, the entire team and the entire endeavor
都成了我的责任
was pretty much my responsibility.

Pending whether it's a basket, based on the client.
有很多时候 我真的感觉如果自己没能起得了床
I really felt a lot of the time like if I didn't get out of bed
去做接下来的工作 整个工程都会无法继续下去
and do the next thing, this wouldn't be able to continue.
我没有那种手艺 我什么技能都没有
I didn't have the hand skills. I didn't have any skills.
但伊劳拉的双手就像有魔法一般 而且她很有头脑
But Elora has the magic in her hands, and she has the brain,
她有一种能力 能将别人抛弃不用的高端想法
and she has the ability to pick up ideas
纳为己用
that are falling from very high.
工程队成了她的公♥司♥之后
As it became her company,
从人事到财务 一切都成了她的职责
it fell on her to look after everything, from HR to finance to everything.

Questioning myself, and regretting being involved in any of this to begin with.

...a whole other cascade of problems, we have to consider that.

Everything has been quite tenuous and a struggle.

But no matter the stress and strain and weight,
比起让120个人失业来还是要好得多
it couldn't ever quite compare with the idea of sending 120 people home.

Taking that creative, dynamic, chaotic process

of anything that's pioneering, it tests your character.

where everyone tells you it's not possible

and that you have to fit into a square,

And so you try.

While building Sharma Springs, I was slogging through the process
因为在创意方面
because in the creative side of things,
整个室内空间都是未知的
the whole interior space was pretty much unknown.

And it was a really interesting challenge to flesh it out.

In order to turn these gorgeous shells with beautiful structural techniques

into a home,

in order to keep the promise of that beautiful form...

everything else inside has to live up to it somehow.

We had to reinvent everything.

Like, the fridge would bug everyone walking into the house.

And what we found pretty quickly was

that we couldn't really go buy doorknobs and light switches...

or even furniture.

We had to make everything.

both as its natural intact beautiful form

and not mess with it too much.
我们也会把竹子彻底劈开 用不同的方式切开
And then also just totally slice it apart and chop it apart in different ways
寻找劈开后出现的不同属性
and find the properties that can come out of that.

We gotta just follow how many spaces we get

and whatever size they are.

So much of what we do is just playful.

It's an ongoing process of just trying to reinvent the universe

in a way that didn't exist before.

I like to nickname Elora as a bamboo fundamentalist.
因为这座房♥子中的每一个部分 都是用竹子做的
Because every single part of the building is made out of bamboo,
甚至连那些不是明显用竹子做的东西也是
even the things that are maybe not the most obvious to make out of bamboo.
每一块竹子都是独一无二的
Each piece of bamboo is unique.
这些独特性增加了房♥子的魔力
It's the uniqueness that adds the magic.
比如某个品种的竹子的根是弯的
For example, the root of one species of bamboo curves,
会形成这种很棒的把手形状
and it becomes this really cool handle shape
我们在好几扇门上都用到了
that we used for several of the doors.
主卧床的床头板
For the headboard of the master bed,

we simply sliced a big beautiful pole of bamboo
其内部的空间刚好可以用来放眼镜
and the hollows inside are the perfect spot to put your glasses
或是耳环
or your earrings.
在巴厘语中 人们称之为“塔克苏”
In Balinese, they call it "taksu."
“塔克苏”的意思是“生命”
"Taksu" means, like, "the life."
如果能让竹子展现其“塔克苏”
And if you can make the bamboo show its "taksu,"
那人们就会看到它的美
then people will see the beauty of it.
人们就会看到生命
They can see life.
沙玛泉将建材的美
Sharma Springs has this combination of the beauty of the material
用一种柔和的方式搭建在一起
put together in a way that has a softness to it,

which actually makes it work as a home.

This house has a feel to it you gravitate towards.

You just connect with it.

By working with bamboo in all of these different ways,

Elora Hardy has taken the building of bamboo structures to another level

and brought to the world the possibility of what you can achieve with bamboo.

to share what I felt Bali gave me.

It's somewhere between giving back to Bali and giving Bali to everyone in the world.

After designing Sharma Springs,
