Before I came to Al-Anon, I was a cook.
我是说 我现在还是个厨师 我想 我是不同种类的厨师了
I mean, I'm still a cook. I'm just a different kind of cook, I guess.
我和我哥总在一起做菜 尤其是小时候
My brother and I, we would cook a lot together, especially when we were kids.
那时我们最亲近
That's when we were closest.

Food was always our common ground.
我们想一起开家餐馆
We wanted to open a restaurant together.
我们想好了名字 想好了风格 什么都想好了
We had a name, we had a vibe, all of it.
我哥会让别人感到有自信
My brother could make you feel confident in yourself.
小时候 有事情让我紧张 害怕时 我就不想去做那件事
When I was a kid, if I was nervous, scared, wouldn't want to do something,

As we got older, I realized I didn't know anything about him. Really.

He stopped letting me into the restaurant, couple years ago.

And I think that flicked a switch in me,

where I was like, okay, fuck you, watch this.
因为我们通过是食物建立起感情的
And because we had this connection through food,
他让我觉得自己不被需要 不够好 不够格 不够酷
and he had made me feel so rejected, and lame, and shitty, and uncool,
我就制定了一个计划 计划在全世界所有最好的餐馆里工作
I made this plan where I was going to work
in all the best restaurants in the world.
我要去真正的厨房♥里工作 不去那种狗屁夫妻店
I'm going to go work in real kitchens, like fuck Mom and Dad's piece of shit.
现在听这些话感觉很荒谬 但我那时就是那么做的
And it sounds ridiculous,
me saying that now, but that's what I did.
我吃了很多苦
And I got the shit kicked out of me.
我择香草 剥牡蛎 蛤蜊 海胆的壳
And I separated herbs,
and I shucked oysters, and clams and uni.
我割伤过自己
And I cut myself.
大蒜 洋葱 辣椒都进过我的指甲里 也进过我的眼睛里
And I got garlic, and onions and peppers in my fingernails and in my eyes.
我的皮肤又干又油
And my skin was dry and oily at the same time.
因为总用刀 我的手指上都是老茧 我的胃也伤了
I had calluses on my fingers from the knives and my stomach was fucked.
真的是 吃尽了苦头
And it was... Everything.
几年后 发生了这样可笑的事 就是…
A couple years later, this funny thing happened, which was like...
我这辈子有史以来第一次 开始觉得自己掌控了工作岗位
For the first time in my life,
I started to find this station for myself.
我手脚麻利 不害怕
And I was fast. I wasn't afraid.
干得清楚明白 我觉得…
And it was clear and I felt...
我觉得还好 知道吧
I felt okay, you know.
我知道蔬菜要怎么搭配 蛋白质 火候 酱汁
I knew which vegetables went together, proteins, temperatures, sauces,
所有的东西都一清二楚 新手来餐厅实习
all that shit, and when somebody new came in to restaurant to stage,
我把看他们看作竞争者
I'd look at them like they're competition,
心想 我一定要打败这个傻♥逼♥
like I'm going to smoke this motherfucker.
我觉得我能用食物表达自我
I felt like I could speak through the food,
我能用创意来交流
like I could communicate through creativity.
那种信心
And that kind of confidence,
觉得自己很擅长做一件事 这件事那么新颖 那么令人激动
like I was good at something that was so new and that was so exciting,
我只想让他知道那一点
and I just wanted him to know that,
妈的 我只想让他说一句“做得好”
and fuck, I just wanted him to be like, "Good job."
他越是不回应
And the more he wouldn't respond,
我们的关系就越疏远
and the more our relationship... kind of strained,
我就越痴迷于烹饪 就越擅长烹饪
the deeper into this I went and the better I got.
我越与人保持距离 就越没有朋友
And the more people I cut out, the quieter my life got.
厨房♥的日常惯例是那么地
And the routine of the kitchen was so...
一以贯之 要求严格 繁忙艰苦
consistent, and exacting, and busy, and hard
充满活力 我忘却了时间 而他撒手人寰了
and alive, and I lost track of time and he died.
把他的餐馆留给了我
And he left me his restaurant.
过去的几个月里 我一直在努力让餐馆东山再起
And over the last couple months, I've been trying to fix it,
因为那里的状况很糟糕 很明显
because it was in rough shape, and it's very clear that me
