But all they're finding is the more aggressive crabeater species.

And even with numbers on their side, they're not interested in taking them on.

[Bertie] That is a Weddell seal at last.

But it is a tough target.

Ben, please go forwards 500 meters. They found a seal.

Well, this is a broad sheet of ice and that seal is slap bang in the middle,

that's big enough to wash it in the water.

But looks like they have got a game plan.

So that wave, it was like an underwater shockwave,

and it has just shattered the piece of ice.

Now, they're spy hopping. They can get right next

It did look like it had blood coming out of it,

but it's... it's definitely not a goner.

wash the seal off, but they've got this whole repertoire,

This family of three females have shown a range of clever hunting techniques.

So, we're heading back down the Gullet to search for another pod.

[Leigh] Oh, I see 'em now. Now, they're going... Yeah, they're B1s.

There is a male and a female together.

What's really striking today is just how hot it is.

Normally when I've been filming in the Arctic or the Antarctic,

it's keeping cool enough. I'm wearing too many clothes,

Despite their hunger, the B1s still aren't keen to hunt them.

And then we go, "Ah! Yay! Here we go!" And then they go, "Nah, it's the wrong...

Finally, we find Weddell seals,
B1虎鲸比较喜欢 也比较容易得手的猎物
the preferred, easier to catch prey of the B1s.
但是牠们不在冰上，而是在陆地上
But they're not on ice, they're on land.
挺特别的，看到威德尔海豹
It's pretty striking to be looking at Weddell seals
和这些使用浪击的虎鲸
with these wave-washing killer whales
牠们从旁边游过去，捉不到那些海豹
swimming past, you know, not able to access them.
牠们特殊又神奇的浪击策略
Their really specialized, incredible wave-washing strategy
起不了作用，因为没有海冰
is not gonna work when there is no sea ice.

So, as our climate warms,

that could mean the end of this amazing killer whale
也可能跟着一起消失
wave-washing culture.
找寻了12小时，却一次也无法出击
Twelve hours of searching and not one hunt. It just doesn't add up.
实在不合理

They are one of the planet's top predators.
每天总共该吃掉四头海豹
Between them, they should be eating four seals a day.

With a few days left, a storm rolls in.

Winds gusting 100 miles per hour and heavy snow stop our search.

The worst of the storm has passed...

[Bertie] And it's shaken loose plenty of sea ice.

A pod of five B1s are out to take advantage.

Well, we thought looking in this wind and snow was pretty pointless,

'cause we can barely see our hands in front of our faces...

[chuckles] ...but we've just found some killer whales.

And, yeah, they're on the hunt, but keeping up with them

and keeping track of them is proving pretty difficult.

There are seals everywhere, but guess what?

They're the aggressive crabeater species again.

The B1s have always ignored crabbies... until now.

Okay, they're coming up on a chunk of ice with a crabeater seal on it.
[seal hisses]
就算B1虎鲸用浪击 把食蟹海豹冲进水里
[Bertie] Even if the B1s wash a crabby into the water,
也不能保证一定能抓到牠
there's no guarantee they'll catch it.

牠们绝对比较喜欢威德尔海豹
They definitely have a preference for Weddell seals.
食蟹海豹更凶、更敏捷
Crabeaters, they're much more feisty, much more agile.
更难以捕获
They're a more difficult prey item to catch.
但是在这种情况下，虎鲸必须进食
But in these circumstances, the whales do need to eat.

[Bertie] And this is a major change in the behavior
we've seen on this expedition.
