[dramatic music playing]
Whoa! I can see the waves are just pumping in there.
There go the iguanas. Let's go!
Wave coming!
[dramatic music playing]
[Bertie] I'm in the Galapagos.
A 76,000-square-mile marine reserve,
made up of 19 volcanic islands.
It lies 600 miles off the coast of South America.
Wild and isolated,
it looks like nowhere else on the planet.
I've wanted to explore here since I was a little kid.
[music fades]
[transcendent music playing]
[Bertie] This is nuts!
So much life down here.
There's turtles zooming around and sea lions.
Wow! These are spotted eagle rays.
Mr. Ray from Finding Nemo.
The unusual mix of warm and cold water currents
attracts an incredible range of animals.
It's just fish everywhere.
You never know what you might see next.
Oh, look! Penguins!
[cheering]
It might seem strange to see a penguin… [chuckles]
...in the tropics, around the equator, but the water here is really cold.
It's nutrient-rich.
So it can support even a penguin.
Our mission is to film three unbelievable wildlife spectacles,
found nowhere else on Earth.
[music fades]
[Bertie] All of them take place along the Galapagos coast,
the volatile borderlands where sea and land collide.
[tense music playing]
[Bertie] Where survival means going the extra mile.
Gracias.
Landing on this lava landscape feels like taking a step back in time.
Look at the state of that.
[music fades]
Big mat of iguanas.
It honestly just looks like a bunch of little dinosaurs,
and the setting is just crazy, on the edge of a volcano.
This is an iguana hot spot in every sense of the word.
They gather here in their thousands,
basking on the sun-drenched, black volcanic rocks.
They use their bodies like a big solar panel.
They charge themselves up in the sun.
It's thought their scales absorb enough energy
to power a 100-watt light bulb.
Luckily, they have help keeping those scales in tip-top condition.
[soft music playing]
Look closely at this little group of iguanas,
and there is just bright, red crabs everywhere.
They're Sally Lightfoot crabs.
They get that name 'cause of the way they hop around between the rocks.
I don't know who Sally is, though.
They just look so sneaky,
you just see them creeping around amongst the iguanas.
With their little mischievous faces.
And it's good for the iguanas 'cause they're picking off dead skin.
Occasionally, they try and go for a bit of live skin,
and the iguana goes, "Get off," and hits it with his claw.
But the odd irritation is a small price to pay
for keeping their skin clean and their body solar charged.
They need all the heat they can get for where they're headed next.
[dramatic music playing]
[Bertie] Plunging into cold water…
would be fatal for most lizards.
But these guys can rack up enough body heat on land
to survive a 60-minute swim.
Any longer and the cold will paralyze their muscles.
And they're not just up against the clock.
They're up against the elements.
The best feeding grounds lie beyond the surf and out to sea.
I can see the waves are just pumping in there.
I want to film the iguanas as they enter a set of breakers
the locals call "The Washing Machine."
Galapagos dive expert, Javier Mahauad, is joining me.
He thinks this dive is going to get spicy.
So are we talking, like, level five, like, jalapeño spicy or…
We are talking, like, chicken enchilada spicy.
- [Bertie] Okay, okay. Not Sriracha spicy… - Level three and a half.
- No. - [Bertie] … chicken enchilada spicy.
- Three and a half, halfway. - What do you think is the best strategy?
Just to sit and wait in one spot for the iguanas to come to us,
or go and find them?
The best strategy is bracing down and waiting, all right?
Tuck in in a little protected rocky bed and hold on?
Yeah, find a nice boulder, all right?
[Bertie] Oh, wave coming!
[dramatic music playing]
[Bertie] Javier said to hold on…
but with a camera in one hand, that's easier said than done.
The iguanas are using their thick, powerful tails to dive under the waves.
This is the most dangerous dive I've ever done.
[music fades]
[Bertie] Eventually, we get beneath the waves.
[soft music playing]
[Bertie] It's like a different world.
Down on the rocky seabed are thick carpets of seaweed.
They grow in abundance here thanks to the cold,
nutrient-rich waters surrounding the islands.
This is the prize awaiting any iguana tough enough to make the journey.
Look, there's one just here.
Wow!
They're mainly vegetarian.
And you can see this big male is just chomping along.
They've got those cute little stubby faces that let them get their teeth
really close to the rock.
But the clock is ticking.
Down here, their body temperature is dropping.
They need to make every second of feeding count.
He looks like a little Godzilla!
Like, their tail moves side-to-side.
See those big claws that it's developed to grip onto the rocks.
So while I get blown around, it can hold really tight.
Now, watching them spend all this effort gnawing on the seaweed,
they're still, in a day, only gonna eat about an ounce, 30 grams of seaweed.
I don't think I've ever filmed an animal go to such extreme lengths to eat.
And their lives are only going to get tougher.
Seaweed is highly vulnerable to climate change.
A warming planet triggers more frequent climatic events, called "El Niño."
They cause ocean currents to shift, bringing warmer water to the Galapagos.
In 1998, an intense El Niño killed off much of the iguanas' precious food source.
On some islands, their population fell by a staggering 90 percent.
But this unique Galapagos species knows how to cling on.
They've had to go through so many incredible adaptations to live here.
In leaner times, they can shrink their entire bodies by 20 percent.
It's an extreme adaptation that helps them survive tough times.
It's just so wild to see these marine iguanas swimming underwater.
Sixty minutes is almost up.
The longer it stays in the water,
the greater the chance of becoming paralyzed by the cold.
So that iguana is gonna head back to land now to warm up.
[music fades]
Well, Javier said it was gonna be spicy. And it was definitely spicy.
