[Bertie] The hyenas have pushed the dogs off the kill
to finish off what's left.

[Bertie] I can feel the dogs' disappointment.

Well, this just keeps getting worse.

The hyenas are not satisfied with just stealing the kill,

and they are tracking the dogs back to the den.

Not a good situation if they find it.

I'm concerned for the dogs, but there's nothing we can do.

[Bertie] Oh, wow, look at the little pups fight over the food.

And the adults also look out for each other.

See, O'Malley here, he's got a big limp and on the last hunt,

I thought from the air I saw him get whacked by a warthog.

Fortunately, the pack will care for him while he recovers.

He's having his wounds cleaned by another pack member.

You know, as a predator, most mammals are solitary,

they live by themselves, so if they get hurt hunting,

they're in big trouble.

But, wild dog society is different.

Most wild dogs won't make it beyond seven years.

Because of the danger they put themselves in to feed and protect their family.

So, raising as many of these pups to adulthood

is vital for the pack's survival.

of any of Africa's large predators.

[Bertie] But as we get closer to a herd of animals,

there's a species I never expected to see here.

I mean, I looked into the distance

and dotted around were loads and loads of animals,

and I thought maybe these are wildebeests or zebra.

You look closely and it's just cows.

There are over one million cattle in Botswana,

and they bring a unique threat to the dogs.

[over radio] Cows and zebra are not two animals
that… should be walking next to each other.
