it's because, whoo-hoo-hoo, that is coming,
that was a lot of lightning, so we figured it is
probably best to get out of the water, because if that
comes this way it could get pretty horrible.
(thunder)
There's an island with shelter on nearby...
we'll head there to wait out the storm.
"Come to the tropics" they said, "it'll be lovely" they said.
I guess even Paradise has its off days.
Next morning, the storm has passed and
we're heading off early.
This is one of the few places on Earth where biodiversity
is actually increasing.
It's become a safe haven for many rare species,
including the Devil ray.
But it hasn't always been this way.
Been told about a spot up ahead at the base of these cliffs
where there's some evidence of a much darker time.
(splash)
你看
BERTIE (over radio): Wow, look!
See how all the coral's just rubble.
All of this has been dynamite fished.
BERTIE: By dropping explosives
the fishermen got a quick, easy catch.
In one hit they could collect hundreds of fish.
But the blast wiped out the entire ecosystem...
Turning the reef to rubble.
Without coral, there's nowhere for fish to live,
and nothing for predators to hunt.
The local community realized fishing like this
was unsustainable.
They had to find a way to reverse the damage...
So they turned to conservation and tourism,
forming the Misool Marine Reserve, a 500 square mile area,
inside Raja Ampat.
Where fishing has been restricted since 2005.
I'm keen to find out more, so I've arranged to meet Ayub,
one of the rangers that protects the reserve.
Ayub, before you were all rangers,
what did you all do for jobs?
AYUB: Most of our rangers are from the fishing community.
They used to fish in this area.
Some of them damaged the habitat,
but that's in the past.
They didn't know fishing was forbidden.
When they started working as rangers
it all became clear.
They now understand why marine life is important
and they're even telling other people
not to fish in the No Take Zone.
BERTIE: When you encounter the fishermen that are fishing
illegally and you stop them, what's their reaction like?
AYUB: At first they get very angry.
They don't like us being there.
But we stay calm
and explain that although fishing isn't allowed here
not all the fish will stay in the No Take Zone
they can swim anywhere they want.
BERTIE: So by protecting this place, the fish have come back
and they spill out of the protected area, and then the
fishermen actually benefit even though they're not
allowed to fish inside the No Take Zone?
AYUB: Yeah, that's right.
BERTIE: I think what you do is absolutely incredible and
please keep doing it.
Now I understand why the devil ray has found refuge
in these waters.
It's being pushed to extinction by over fishing
in the rest of its range.
What they've done here is genius,
the fish population is booming.
(splash)
BERTIE (over radio): This place is just pumping full of life.
来了
Here they come!
Whoo hoo!
These are all big-eyed jacks.
There's just so many of them,
and since the no take zone here was set up
the biomass, the weight of living things,
has gone up on average of more than 200%,
and in some key sites up to 600%!
Wow look at the fusiliers coming over the top.
I tried to learn all the names of the fish before I came here,
but the identification book was just too thick.
There's more than 1,600 species of fish here.
This reef that we're on now
is about the size of a football field,
and it's been counted on a reef here,
nearly five times as many fish as there are in the entire
Caribbean Sea put together.
Now this is really cool,
you can see dotted around the reef are these
big tall boulders,
and on the tops of the boulders
are very cool little fish.
You can see in amongst these bigger blue fish
two little cleaner wrasse.
They're called cleaner wrasse because they offer a very
important service on the reef.
BERTIE: If you're a fish with flaky skin or parasites,
this is where you come for a spa treatment.
BERTIE (over radio): Anytime bigger fish swim past,
it's buzzing on out and saying,
'Hello, I offer a cleaning service'.
It's just a lovely little relationship,
the big fish get a clean
and the cleaner wrasse gets a meal.
Here comes another one now.
Aaahhh.
That is some serious trust.
BERTIE: One little wrasse can clean 100 different fish
in a single day.
But some jobs are bigger than others...
BERTIE (over radio): Manta! Manta!
Wooho, there's a manta ray and it is huge!
The cleaner wrasse have got their biggest client of the day!
Ha, ha.
OK, let's go in nice and slow.
But these mantas are
a bigger, bolder relation of the devil ray.
Oh it's letting me get really close.
you can really see why.
Looks like a big spaceship turning round.
Oh I can see its eye.
BERTIE: They have huge brains, the biggest of any fish.
It might explain why this one is so inquisitive.
BERTIE (over radio): Manta's coming back around.
Ooh it's coming really close!
Belly up.
Oh look at all the cleaner wrasse just pouring off it.
Well my heart is beating out of my chest.
That was crazy.
It does not get much better than that.
It's just so big!
