身为野生动物制片人 我曾到过不少偏远地区拍片
BERTIE: As a wildlife filmmaker,
I've worked in some pretty remote places,
但这次是完全不同层级
but this one is next level!
这里是三个国家的交界处
The spot we are here
is actually the border between three countries.
船的左侧是喀麦隆 我们后方刚果共和国
To the boat's left is the Cameroon,
back behind us is the Republic of Congo,
而我们的目的地是前方的中非共和国
and up ahead, our destination is the Central African Republic.
我们要前往一片广阔的荒野 赞葛山加国家公园
We're heading to a vast wilderness,
Dzanga-Sangha National Park.

Our goal is to try and track down
the jungle's mightiest resident.
我们有五周的时间拍摄
We've got five weeks to film
one of the biggest and rarest elephants in Africa,
非洲最大、最稀有的大象

a forest elephant tusker,
也就是象牙长到垂地的巨大公象
huge males with tusks that sweep down to the floor.
任务将不简单
It won't be easy.
超长的象牙 使得牠们成为盗猎者的头号♥目标
The tuskers' supersized ivory
makes them a prime target for poachers.
仅仅12年内，非洲的丛林象数量 就减少了一半
In just 12 years,
Africa's forest elephant population was halved.
要能找到大象，我们需要专业协助
To have any chance of finding one
we're going to need some expert knowledge.

Well, this is not a jungle you want to walk around in

unless you really know what you're doing,

and I don't know what I'm doing, so up ahead, this is Ngbanda.

Ngbanda's a BaAka, they're an incredible group of people

that have lived in this forest for generations.
So we're in good hands.
(distant roar)

I am an elephant tracker.

I know how to find and follow elephants.

I know how to stay safe and not get in their way.

BERTIE: Ngbanda is leading us to a very special place,
那里很有机会找到象牙王
where we'll have the best chance of finding a tusker.

The elephants have gone this way.

BERTIE: That way? NGBANDA: Oui.
(distant grumbling)

We're getting closer.

This is Dzanga Bai, village of elephants.

这处位在丛林里的一大♥片♥空地 叫做「拜」
This big, open clearing in the forest is known as a bai.
数十年来由大象建立 长度相当于五座足球场
Created by the elephants over decades,
it's the length of five football fields.
这些大象大多时间都躲在森林里
This species spends most of their lives
hidden in the forest.
看到这么多头出现在空地上 实在不可思议
To see this many out in the open is incredible.
如果想找巨大的公象牙王 那么我们应该来对地方了
If we want to find a big male tusker, this could be our spot.
地球上没有其他地方
There is nowhere else on Earth
会聚集这么多丛林象
where forest elephants gather in these numbers.
这里最吸引人的地方
And the big attraction...
(bubbling)
藏在泥泞深处
...is hidden deep in the mud.
瞧瞧这头母象和牠的宝宝
See this female and her little calf,
牠将象鼻往下压，吹出泡泡
she's pushing down with her trunk, blowing bubbles.
(bubbling)
牠看似在嬉闹，但是这样玩弄泥巴…
It looks like she's just messing about,
but this mud play
却是正经事
is serious stuff.
牠们以植物为主的饮食
Their plant-based diet lacks essential minerals
缺乏钾与钙等重要矿物质
like potassium and calcium.
牠们需要的矿物质埋在泥泞深处
The minerals that they're after are buried deep underground,
所以牠们得用力挖
so they've got to mine for them.
牠们将象鼻深入泥泞，然后吹气
They drive their trunks into the mud and blow,
利用水泡松动矿物质
using bubbles to dislodge the minerals.
但是这需要练习
But it takes some practice.
象鼻是非常神奇的东西
The elephant's trunk is the most unbelievable thing.
里头有数万条肌肉
It's got tens of thousands of muscles in it.
那个宝宝还没完全学会怎么使用
And I don't think that little baby
has learnt to fully use it yet.
只会挥来挥去
It just sort flicks it around.
(bird chirps)
丛林象为小家庭为单位群居
Forest elephants live in small family groups.
(squeal)
这片空地让这些 平时个性害羞的动物来此社交
The bai is a place for these normally shy animals
to socialize.
每天会有高达两百头大象 聚集在这片空地
Up to 200 gather in this clearing every day.
牠们沉重的脚步创造出一片栖地
Their heavy footfall has created a habitat
吸引几种非洲最稀有的动物前来
that attracts some of Africa's rarest animals.
从巨大的大林猪
From giant forest hogs...
到斑哥羚羊
...to bongos...
(moo)
还有非洲灰鹦鹉
...and African grey parrots.
在这群动物之间
Somewhere amongst the crowd I'm hoping I'll spot
希望能找到最大头的大象
the biggest elephant of all, a legendary tusker.

BERTIE: Ngbanda, elephant in BaAka?

NGBANDA: Njoku.
(elephant roars)

BERTIE: What about the big, big elephant, big male? Tusks?

We're seeing some njoku wambule,
但是牠们都不是我们要找的象牙王
but none of them are the really big tuskers we're after.

This male here might look big;
they get much, much bigger.

Those tusks can reach all the way down to the ground.
但是獠牙越长
But the bigger the tusks,
大象遭到盗猎的风险就越高
the more at risk the elephant is from poaching.

And open areas like this are where forest elephants
是丛林象最脆弱的时候
are at their most vulnerable.
(roar)

I'm not sure what spooked them, but it's really fired them up.

They're very, very jumpy.

we'd be in serious trouble.

It's too dangerous to stay on the ground,
so it's time for plan B.

so the setup needs to be quiet and quick.
