BERTIE: I'm in Patagonia, where I've come to film
my favorite big cat, the puma.
美洲狮
不是普通的美洲狮 而是我多年前初次相遇的一头母狮
Not just any puma, a female I first met four years ago.
佩塔佳，如今牠面临危险
Petacca.
And she's in trouble.
- 是一头大公狮 - 公狮吗？
DIEGO: There's a big male, man.
BERTIE: Male?
对，牠真是一头野兽
Oh yeah, he's an absolute monster,
瞧牠体型多高大
look at the size of him.

Last time I saw Petacca she was just a cub.

Now she's a fiercely protective mother.

She's trying to block his path to the cubs.
(growling)

Cubs are running, cubs are running.

That male will try and kill the cubs because if he can kill them

he'll bring her back into heat,
and then he can father his own cubs.

BERTIE: I'm in the far south of Chile,

a wilderness of jagged mountains and freezing lakes.

Torres del Paine is a protected area
nearly twice the size of LA,

There could be up to 100 of them in this area.

Although this place has one of the highest concentrations of

pumas on Earth, we're looking for one puma in particular,

because four years ago I came here and got to know

a female puma called Sarmiento and her cubs.

And unfortunately Sarmiento's now gone but one of her cubs is

still here, she's called Petacca,
and there are rumors that she might even have

a family of her own now.

If Petacca does have cubs to feed,

there's a better chance of seeing a hunt.
美洲狮的狩猎十分精采 但是众所皆知非常难拍
Puma hunts are spectacular, but notoriously hard to film.
在这片广大的土地上 要找到牠将是一场挑战
Spotting her in this vast landscape will be a challenge,
因此我们兵分三路
so we've split into three teams.

ROBERTO (over radio): Bertie, Bertie do you copy?

BERTIE: Okay yeah, we'll go along the lake road,
and you're going to go up to the north, roger that.

Roberto Donoso is one of the best trackers in the business.

BERTIE: And he knows Petacca's habits.

here and Petacca often uses it.

BERTIE: Diego Araya is another legendary tracker.

Every pair of eyes will increase our chances of finding Petacca.

Pumas are just unbelievably well camouflaged,

I mean they just disappear into the landscape,

they travel across it like ghosts.

ROBERTO: It's a perfect day because there is no wind.

It's very quiet, so we can hear all the clues.

The birds, the mammals, the guanacos.
Everything is relevant.

BERTIE: If a puma is near, other animals are on high alert.
我上次看到佩塔佳已经是四年前的事
It's been four years since I last saw Petacca and
这段时间对美洲狮来说 可能发生很多事
a lot can go wrong for a puma in that time.
严峻的天气、危险的猎物
Harsh weather, dangerous prey and fights with other cats
与和其他大猫的冲突 让牠们每天都得为了求生奋斗
make life a daily battle for survival.

I'm desperate to catch up with her.

ROBERTO (over radio): Bertie do you copy?

I've found Petacca, I've found Petacca.

BERTIE (over radio): Ah, amazing.
Which side, where should I come to?

ROBERTO (over radio): Please go to the west side.

ROBERTO: You see her? BERTIE: Oh, wow, just here?

That's Petacca.
ROBERTO: That's Petacca.

The last time I saw her she was a cub and now she is

a massive adult with two cubs of her own.

The cubs are a male and a female.

Roberto thinks they're about nine months old.
让牠们安然活到这个年纪 是很了不起的成就
Keeping them alive for this long is a serious achievement.

It's pretty special to see her again.

The cubs have been given nicknames by the trackers.

The male is Frost, his smaller sister is Breeze.
想到自从我上次见到佩塔佳后
To think of all the things that Petacca has been through

since I last saw her, the fact that she's survived this long
还有牠存活这么久 现在还有两只幼狮相伴
and now has two of her own cubs.
真开心再次见到牠，而且状况这么好
It's lovely to see her again, doing well.
身为顶级掠食动物 并不代表生活很轻松
Being a top predator doesn't mean life is easy.
美洲狮每几周就必须饱餐一顿
Pumas need a big meal every couple of weeks.
而在这里，大餐就是原鸵
A big meal here means guanaco.
身为骆驼科的一员
A member of the camel family, they're fast,
原驼速度飞快、强悍 体型可达佩塔佳的三倍
tough and up to three times the size of Petacca.
牠们视力绝佳 因此美洲狮想悄悄接近
They've got brilliant eyesight,
so if you're a puma,
不被发现，是无比困难的挑战
sneaking up on one without being detected
is very, very challenging.
往远处望去 可以看到牠们分散在各地
If you look out across the landscape they're dotted about
如果有人发现美洲狮，就会发出警报
and if any of them spots a puma they're going to let out
an alarm call that's going to tell all the guanaco in the area

Hunting guanaco is a dangerous way to make a living,

and Petacca has two growing appetites to feed.

So mom is following a guanaco that's in the valley over here.

So, we're just trying to figure out where we need to be to make

So, she's down here somewhere stalking up this way.

It takes Petacca two hours to get into ambush range.

BERTIE: Here she goes... ROBERTO: 20 meters.

She's, uh, currently walking away down towards the lake.

Petacca looks okay but pumas can be badly injured
美洲狮可能会身受重伤
in such violent battles.

The vast majority of Guanaco hunts are unsuccessful.
牠是能力绝佳的掠食动物 跟踪技巧非常高明
She's a very, very capable predator,
her stalk was amazing, to have closed all that distance
可以拉近距离
而不被发现，但是尽管如此
without being spotted.
But even though she managed that,
牠也跳到原驼身上
even though she managed to jump on the guanaco, you know,
但原驼奋力反抗，把牠甩了下去
the guanaco put up a really good fight, bucked her off.
牠只能饿肚子，继续狩猎
She goes hungry, the hunt continues.

Frost and Breeze are eager to see what mom has for dinner.
牠们今晚没得吃了 但至少牠们还待在一起
