After weeks on sardine chunks and smoothies…

the chicks need to start eating something more substantial.

It's a big step because now they move to whole fish.

For the first few days, they struggle.

In the wild, penguin parents can actually slow down their digestion.

So, when they feed their young, fish can be almost intact.

And rather large.

You'll see them looking like they're gasping for air.
其实是在努力吞下大鱼
It's just them trying to swallow the big fish.
尽管每条鱼都比小企鹅的半身长
Despite each fish being over half their body length,
它们天生具备应对能力
the chicks are perfectly equipped for the job.
企鹅没有牙齿 但舌头上有倒刺
Penguins don't have teeth, so they have spikes on their tongue.

And that's what helps them to swallow.
将来回归野外
And if they do return to the wild,
它们也知道要吃什么
now they'll know what to eat.

Over the next three weeks, something remarkable starts to happen.

Two days later, there's some worrying news at the center.
很多雏鸟咳嗽 打喷嚏
We've been having a lot of chicks that are coughing or sneezing.
而且像这样打喷嚏…
And with sneezes like these…
病毒极易扩散
it's easy for a bug to spread.
198号♥也被感染了
And 198 has caught it.
雏鸟破壳时
Our hatchlings hatch
几乎不具备免疫系统 本应从父母身上获得抗体
with almost no immune system. They would've got that from their parents.

So it is something we do have to deal with.

But, luckily, it is quite easy to fix.

Treatment involves something called a nebulizer.

You can compare it to an inhaler.

You can't put a mask on a penguin. They're not gonna like that.

So we had to get a bit creative

The nebulizer is a kind of steamy spa treatment for poorly penguins.

现在开始真正训练
Now the real work begins.
要想获得回归野外的资格
To be even considered for release to the wild,
每只企鹅必须通过游泳能力测试
every penguin has to pass a swimming proficiency test.
我们关闭所有出口 强制它们每日三次
So we close all the gates, forcing them to swim in the pool
每次游泳二十分钟
for 20 minutes, three times a day.

It's a strict regime.

Swimming non-stop.
不能触碰池底
No touching the bottom.

And absolutely no getting out.

They do panic, but they will eventually get it.

This is just to build their muscles, strength and stamina.

This is just a start of what's to come for them.

And no one is in the pool longer than little 198.

It's amazing.
当初辅助孵化时存活率只有50%
When we assisted him, it was a 50 50

because we usually don't see a good success rate

with our assisted hatchlings.

So it's so rewarding seeing 198 doing so much better.
