Despite all the genteel charm, Bernini was known to have a low boiling point.

Underneath all those social graces

was the bloodthirsty temper of a Neapolitan gangster.

And in one unbelievably shocking episode, he lets it rip.
事情源自一个谣言
It started with a rumour.
传言说Costanza可不怎么constant（永恒 意即花心）
Costanza, it's whispered, was not so constant after all.
好像她与贝尼尼兄弟有一腿
Seems she has a thing about the Bernini boys,
因为她不只和吉安·劳伦佐睡觉
since she's sleeping not just with Gian Lorenzo,
而且还和他的弟弟路易吉睡觉
but with his younger brother, Luigi.
路易吉·贝尼尼 是皮特洛·贝尼尼的儿子
是个雕刻家 不错的建筑师 优秀的数学家
噢 我知道难以使人们相信
Oh, it's hard to believe, I know,
事情怎会是这么巧
that anyone would want to get their hands on anyone except Mr Fabulous himself.
但是谣言会是真的吗？
But could the rumours be true?
于是在一个夜晚 贝尼尼设下了一个圈套
The trap is set that evening.
吉安·劳伦佐神情自然的说第二天要去向下
Gian Lorenzo says breezily how he has to go off to the country the next day,
所以他将不会在城镇的家里
so he won't be in town.
但是他肯定没有去乡下 对吧
But he doesn't go into the country, does he?
相反 第二天清早 他去了Costanza的家
Instead, early next morning, he goes to Costanza's house
然后就守株待兔
and waits.
路易吉现身了 Costanza也出现了
Luigi emerges. So does Costanza.
贝尼尼充满爱意创作的雕塑上鼓鼓的胸部
That swelling breast Bernini had lovingly carved
此时却由于充满热情的拥抱被压的变平了
flattened against Luigi's chest in a passionate embrace.
于是就出现了一场街道追逐战
There's a chase through the streets,
他们穿过广场 奔越桥梁 一直跑到圣彼得教堂
across the piazzas, over the bridges, right into Saint Peter's itself.
正是在那里 这座教堂的建筑师拼命要杀死自己的亲兄弟
Where its official architect does his best to murder his own brother.
吉安·劳伦佐抓起一根铁棍朝路易吉抡了过去
Gian Lorenzo grabs an iron bar and smashes it against Luigi's body,
两根肋骨被打断了
breaking two ribs.
作为一名“奇迹”的创造者 他闻名遐迩
He's famous as a miracle worker.
但这次的奇迹却是自己的亲兄弟并没有被自己杀死
This time the miracle is that he hasn't killed his own brother.
他母亲给教会警♥察♥写了一封信要求把两兄弟分开
It takes a message from their mother to the papal cops to separate them.
他怒气冲天 失去了理智
他带着配剑进了教堂 这完全是对上帝的不尊敬
但是事情还没有结束
And that's not the end of it.
那天下午 吉安·劳伦佐派了一个仆人去Costanza家里
That afternoon, Gian Lorenzo sends a servant to Costanza's house.
他没有割断她的喉咙 相反 她的娇脸被打的伤痕累累
He doesn't cut her throat. Instead, he slashes her perfect face to ribbons.
看来这个从石头中寻找美丽的家伙通过鞭打肉体去摧毁之
So the man who has cut stone to create beauty has cut flesh to destroy it.
但是你知不知道因为这次蓄意伤害他人身体和蓄意谋杀
And what do you suppose is Bernini's punishment
贝尼尼得到了什么惩罚吗？
for grievous bodily harm and attempted murder?
噢 真是个“重”罚啊 3000斯库迪罚款
Oh, a really stiff sentence, a 3,000 scudi fine.
只可惜他的教皇哥们儿最终放弃了这笔罚款
Except that his pal, the Pope, waives it.
教皇说道 胡闹 完全是胡闹嘛 下不为例啊
''Naughty, naughty,'' says the Pope, ''This mustn't happen again.
所以我惩罚你 你得去结婚
''So I sentence you to be married."
而且顺便说一下 这个女子可是全罗马最漂亮的
''And, by the way, she just happens to be the most beautiful girl in Rome."
教皇朝他挤了挤眼 用肘推了推他 这样你就不会再去胡闹了
''That should keep you out of mischief.'' Papal wink, papal nudge.
所以贝尼尼就娶了一个罗马律师的女儿 卡蒂丽娜·特西奥
So Bernini is married off to Caterina Tezio, daughter of a Roman lawyer.
而其他当事人 弟弟路易吉被流放到了波洛尼亚
For his part in the fight, brother Luigi is banished to Bologna.
每个人都进了监狱 那个行凶的仆人
Everyone else goes to jail. The servant who did the razor job
还有招致灾祸的Costanza自己
and, insult added to injury, Costanza herself,
以通奸和乱♥伦♥判了罪
convicted of fornication and adultery.
那座雕塑怎么样了呢
And what happened to the bust?
贝尼尼的新夫人当然不想把它摆在家里
Well, Bernini's new wife wouldn't have it in the house.
当然吉安·劳伦佐也不想 因为他见了雕塑就不舒服
Which is just as well, since Gian Lorenzo couldn't bear to look at it, either.
我想他可能会砸了它
He might, I suppose, have smashed it.
但是幸运的是 来自佛罗伦萨梅第奇家族的买♥♥家适时出手买♥♥下了它
But luckily, a Medici buyer from Florence snapped it up.

Which is why we're looking at it here in the Bargello Museum in Florence.

Well, strangely enough, it's exactly from this moment of the crime against Costanza
正是从Costanza案件以后 不可侵犯的骑士先生开始走霉运了
that things go swiftly downhill for the Cavaliere Untouchable.
而且霉运还是从与贝尼尼密切相关的地方开始的
And it all went wrong in the place that mattered most for Bernini.
这个地方对于他来说就是成也萧何败也萧何
The place that made or broke artists and architects.
那就是圣彼得大教堂
The Cathedral of Saint Peter's.
这是我们所知道的圣彼得大教堂的正面
This is the facade of Saint Peter's we all know,
但是17世纪的教皇们都有着过了头的自信心
but the aggressively confident 17th century popes
他们不知道适可而止
didn't want to stop with this..
他们希望在两个拐角处即我们现在看到的大钟上方再建造两处大钟塔
They wanted two great bell towers at each corner, above where we now see the clocks.
不管怎么说 这些大钟将会为他们唤来忠诚
It was those bells, after all, that would summon the faithful for papal blessings
因此基♥督♥教的梦想也就显得更为真实了
and make the Christian dream real.
但是米开朗基罗的大穹顶却处于中部
But in the middle, of course, was Michelangelo's great dome.
所以刚开始钟塔的设计高度都相对比较低
So the first designs for the towers made them respectfully low.
只有一层高 建造起来就比较有把握 也很结实
Safe, squat, one-storey affairs.
等贝尼尼来了以后 他天生就具有叛逆个性
The along comes Bernini, constitutionally incapable of deference.
他说 我建造的钟塔将会比这个穹顶高的多
''My towers are going to be taller than your dome'', he says.
事实上有三层高
Three storeys tall, in fact.
自基座算起足足有70米高
Almost 70 metres above the original pedestals,
是原先设计总重量的六倍
six times heavier than the original towers.
但问题在于贝尼尼设计的钟塔地基比较松软
Problem was, though, Bernini's towers were about to be built on swampy ground.
在开始的时候他并不是不知道这个情况
It's not that Bernini didn't know about this before he got started.
那只是因为他周围的人都是唯他马首是瞻的阿谀奉承之辈
It's just that he's surrounded by yes men who tell him what he wants to hear.
但这还不是真正最重要的问题
That building tall towers on dodgy ground is no real problem.
真正最重要的问题他周围没有
What he needs are brutally honest advisors

who aren't afraid of spelling out the risks he's taking.

There was one person who knew that building a tall, heavy tower

on unstable foundations was asking for trouble.

That person was Borromini.

But it seemed to be beneath Bernini's dignity to ask his rival for advice.

So, without the benefit of Borromini's criticism,
贝尼尼正一步步迈向灾难
Bernini sails straight into disaster.
16♥4♥1年7月 贝尼尼向世人展示了建好的第一座钟塔
In July, 16♥4♥1, Bernini unveiled his first tower to the public.
两个月后 裂缝出现了
Two months later, cracks start to appear.
贝尼尼开始卧床不起 不吃不喝
Bernini takes to his bed. Won't eat.
这次他病的可不轻 据说都快死了
Gets so ill, he's reported near death.
但是事情变得更糟糕了
It gets worse.
裂缝不仅仅是出现在钟塔的基座上
The cracks aren't just in the foundation of the bell tower.
它们开始蔓延到主教堂了
They've spread to the facade of the main church itself.
那些反对贝尼尼的人开始落井下石痛打落水狗
他们说教堂正面出现的裂缝是由于钟塔的移位造成的
而这一切都是因为教皇把工作交给了一个人

Then, in 16♥4♥4, disaster.

and the staunchest supporter of the bell tower, dies.

There's a new pope, Innocent X,

and he sees it as his job to get rid of all the old favourites, like Bernini.
不管怎样 他喜欢的是巴洛米尼
After all, he has a new favourite, Francesco Borromini.
所以 在贝尼尼的阴影下生活了15年之后
So, after 15 years in Bernini's shadow,
巴洛米尼复仇的时刻到来了
Borromini's moment for revenge has at last arrived.
针对贝尼尼的塔楼 一场调查开始了
An inquiry is set up to deal with Bernini's towers.

Borromini submits detailed evidence,
贝尼尼的灾难终于来临了
a lovingly-rendered drawing of Bernini's disaster.
巴洛米尼说 好吧 你这么做到底是想怎样呢
''Well, what do you expect?'' says Borromini.
塔楼设计的这么高 对于地基来说太重了
''The tower's too tall. It's too heavy for its base supports."
设计的塔楼也很不实用 怎么能建在烂泥上呢
''It's too unwieldy. It's built recklessly on swampy ground."
不管怎么说 它现在还没倒塌真是个奇迹
''It's amazing, actually, it hasn't collapsed already."
看来在倒塌之后得往下挖挖
''It's all very well going digging beneath the tower after the event
看看问题究竟有多严重
to see how serious the damage is."
如果他要是征求过我的意见就好了 因为对于建筑我还略知一二
''If he'd have asked me, since I know a bit about building,
那么我就会告诉他真♥相♥ 但是他没有这么做
I would've told him. But he didn't.''
16♥4♥6年2月23日 在梵蒂冈召开了一次会议
On the 23rd of February, 16♥4♥6, a meeting was held at the Vatican
来讨论贝尼尼建造的南边塔楼的命运
to discuss the fate of Bernini's south tower.
但是教皇已经有了决定
But the Pope had already made his decision.
扒了它
Demolish it.
这个过程花了11个月
The demolition takes 11 months.
如果贝尼尼在圣彼得教堂附近的话 他肯定会知道的
If Bernini had been anywhere near Saint Peter's, he would've seen it and heard it.
绞盘 滑轮 柱子都堆在屋顶上
The winches, the pulleys, the columns stacked on the roof.
塔楼倒了 吉安·劳伦佐 ·贝尼尼也倒下了
Down came the bell tower, and down with it came Gian Lorenzo Bernini
从被万人敬仰的高度跌到一个供人嘲笑的笑柄
from the height of fame and reputation to something like a laughing stock.

It's 16♥4♥8.
由于时代标准的变更 已经50岁的贝尼尼显得老了
Bernini is 50, old by the standards of the time.
