Theo, what am I in the eyes of most people?
仅此一次 文森特.梵高顺风顺水
Just for once,everything was going right for Vincent van Gogh.
他刚刚卖♥♥出自己的第一幅作品
He'd just sold his first painting
然后就被评论家们誉为绘画界未来的天才人物
and he'd been hailed by the critics as the genius of the future.
他是个工作狂 产量一天一幅
He was painting like a demon, a picture a day.
其中的《麦田群鸦》可谓是幅革命性的伟大作品
One of them, this one, Wheatfield with Crows,was a revolutionary masterpiece.
这幅作品是现代艺术流派的先锋之作
It's the painting which begins modern art.
然而 还不到几个星期 这个达到自己绘画生涯顶峰的人却自杀了
Yet, within a few weeks,the man who had achieved it had killed himself.
现在想来 他为什么要那么做呢？
Now, why would he want to do that?
在梵高的一生中 他一直有着孩童般的信念
All his life, Vincent had this childlike faith that his art revolution
他的艺术革命会被人们所知晓
would be seen by everyone.
那么 这幅《麦田群鸦》难道是遭受挫折后绝望的呐喊吗
So, was The Wheatfield a cry of anguished frustration
他将永远不会认识到自己绘画的洞察力
that he would never realise his vision in painting,
抑或是最终修成正果后一声胜利的呐喊？
or was it a shout of triumph that finally he'd done it?

And this kind of painting,turbulent, raw, overwhelmingly emotional,

What he did do was cut off a fleshy chunk of earlobe.

而且当他最终决定要自杀时 人们肯定会异口同声的说
And when he eventually did shoot himself,there was bound to be a chorus of,

What others diagnosed as mental sickness,
在梵高看来倒像是一种启发
Vincent thought was an illumination,
一种对艺术新的审视方法
a new vision of what art could be.

A revelation of heaven, here on earth.

He thought of himself as a prophet, then.

But also, as a thinker.

The thoughts poured themselves out in a torrent of words.

Page after page, day after day.
最终通过读他写过的信件 你就会发现一个真实的梵高
All you have to do to find the real van Gogh,
他一点也不傻 而且还很有思想 善于观察
no fool at all, but a thoughtful,observant man, is to read his letters.
信件数量很多 有几百封 大部分都是写给弟弟提奥的
Hundreds of them,mostly written to his younger brother, Theo.
字里行间都散发着他的灵气
And you'll see that intelligence burning away.

他的语言和写作方式就像
His language and his method are like a brush

His father, the Reverend Theodorus van Gogh,

was pastor in a village in the south Netherlands.

So even when he was rescued from the Calvinist Dutch gloom by his uncle

It was in the Victorian gaslight that the real Vincent started to emerge.

Amidst the grime and grit of Disraeli's London,

the starchy young Dutchman rediscovered Jesus.

He appointed himself as a missionary to the destitute.

And as he wore out shoe leather tramping past the dispossessed, the drunks and the whores,
文森特开始看不起画廊里的小世界
Vincent grew to despise the pygmy world of the galleries.

What he wanted to be was a preacher.

So St Vincent the Good abandoned the plush red carpets,

and set off in search of captives starved for light.

Dirt poor and, as far as Vincent was concerned, in desperate need of saving.

But it still wasn't enough.

After a trial period,

the missionary society who paid his pittance got rid of him.
显然是因为他热心的过头了
Excessive zeal, apparently.
但是梵高是不会轻易就这么屈服的
But you didn't get rid of Vincent van Gogh that easily.
他采取了另外一种布道方式
He hit on a different way to preach,
绘画
he would paint.
这将会是文森特的一项新职业
This would be Vincent's new calling.
而且还很神奇
And this is amazing.
他都快30岁了 这个年龄开始绘画可不怎么合适
He's nearly 30, he's not so much as picked up a paintbrush,
而且他也没有受到过太多的正规训练
much less had any kind of formal training.
但是文森特并不气馁 这个时刻 就是他的“路向大马士革”
But Vincent's not bothered, this is his road-to-Damascus moment.
从某种意义上说 我很高兴从来没有学习过绘画
In a way, I'm glad I never learned painting.
我确信我的绘画技术就在我的骨子里
I know for certain that painting is in the very marrow of my bones.
我想创作出能感动人们的作品
I want to do drawings that will touch people.
我的目标是 人们会这样评论我的作品
I want to get to the point where...Where people say of my work,
他们会被我的作品深深的吸引着
that man, that man feels deeply,
而且人们也能强烈的感受到
that man feels keenly.
艺术会在教会失败的废墟上拔地而起
Art would succeed where the Church had failed.
我会为人们带来拯救和内心的安宁
It would bring salvation and comfort.

Its ministry would be to open the eyes of everyone, especially the poor,
也会认识到那不可思议的生命力
to the miraculous force of life.
被日久折磨带来的无情冷漠所割裂的
Exactly the kind of vision from which they were cut off

by the grey relentlessness of the daily grind.
我仅仅是希望有更多更好的机会更多的展览
I just wish that there were more
从而能把艺术呈现给人♥民♥大众
and better opportunities and exhibitions to bring art to the people.
我的意思是 我并不想锋芒内敛
I mean, far from wanting to hide the light under a bushel,
而是期望着人们早些知道我的才华
I'd sooner let it be seen.
而且如果他是想让人们意识到天堂其实就在眼前
And if he were to give people a sense that heaven was in simple things,

calloused hand, the petal of a flower,

you'd better be a labourer yourself, Vincent thought,

And you don't get much lower than shacking up with a broken-down prostitute,
经常喝得烂醉 扁桃体经常发炎 由母亲养大 是个病秧子
habitually drunk, bad case of quinsy, single mother, sickly kids,
人生旅途中还有另一个人在等着他
another one on the way.
克拉辛娜.霍尔尼克.西嫣就是梵高收留的那个人
Clasina Hoornik,Sien to Vincent who took her in,
她不大可能是梵高的缪斯女神
would be his unlikely muse.
西嫣的悲惨生活就表现她的身体上
Sien's history of misery marked on her body.
下垂的乳♥房♥♥和粘稠的头发是梵高灵感的来源
The drooping breasts and stringy hair became the food of Vincent's inspiration.
他在给提奥的信中写道，世上再没有这样的老年女性了
There's no such thing as an old woman,he wrote to Theo.
在对如此老旧躯体充满感情的描写中，人们能领会到梵高的意图
And in the lovingly described lines of a used body,you can see what he meant.

Not surprisingly, this didn't go down brilliantly with the vicar father.

Theo, no prude, didn't much care for it, either,
但是这并没有阻止他坚定不移支持哥哥的新工作
but it didn't stop him steadfastly supporting his brother's latest career.
不管梵高有多么乖戾 难以捉摸和毫不领情
No matter how surly, unpredictable or ungrateful Vincent was,

every month, regular as clockwork, the brotherly subsidy rolled in.
作为报答 为了不使他破产
In return for keeping him afloat,
梵高也支持自己的弟弟 如今提奥是巴黎的一名艺术品商人了
Vincent supplied Theo, now himself an art dealer in Paris,
他有画可卖♥♥了
with paintings for sale.
但是对于提奥来说 问题是这些作品卖♥♥不出去
