There's the devout, courageous David Caravaggio
也有罪犯歌♥利亚卡瓦拉乔
and then there's the criminal sinner, Goliath Caravaggio.
这个可怜的头颅说道我知道我过去是谁
''I know who I've been'', says a pathetic head, unable to look us in the eyes,
我也知道我都做了什么
''I know what I've done.''
那就像是在绝对的黑暗中向我们展示的一个荒凉景象
It's a desolate vision offered to us in utter blackness.
没有什么美德也没有什么高雅
No virtue, no grace,
只有从卡瓦拉乔头颅中透出的黑暗的真理
just the dark truth from the inside of Caravaggio's head,
随之汹涌而来的还有悲惨的自我认知
flooded with tragic self-knowledge.
对于我来说卡瓦拉乔的艺术力量就是关于真理的力量
For me the power of his art is the power of truth,
最后它还和我们人类有关
not least about ourselves.
因为如果我们曾经有个获得救赎的机会的话
For if we're ever to have a chance of redemption,
那定是从开始重新认知我们内心的
it must begin with an act of recognition that in all of us

the Goliath competes with the David.
1610年7月卡瓦拉乔收拾好他的作品
In July, 1610, Caravaggio rolled up his paintings
前往那不勒斯最终又回到了家乡
and set sail from Naples, finally heading home.
在向北方航行途中
Sailing north, his boat stopped at the tiny harbour of Palo,
他在罗马西方海岸的小海港Palo停下了
on the coast just west of Rome.
在这里当地警卫队长或者是没有听到他受到宽恕的消息
Here, the local captain of the guard either hadn't heard about his pardon
或者是把他当成了其它逃犯
or mistook him for some other fugitive.
不管怎样他被投进了监狱
Either way, he's thrown in jail.
当他想尽办法出来时
By the time he's managed to pay his way out,
他的船已经载着他的作品离开了那是他给鲍格才家族(意大利一贵族世家)的见面礼
his boat has sailed off, along with his paintings, his offering to Borghese.
他拚尽全力希望能赶上船拿回珍贵的货物
Desperate to catch up with his ship with its precious cargo,

Caravaggio sets off north towards Porto Ercole,
这意味者他将要行走100公里的路程
a hundred kilometres through the malarial infested swamp country,

the Maremma.

Here, the final disaster awaited.

In a pathetic attempt to hail a ship,

Caravaggio starts running along the beach under the broiling July sun,
最终虚脱倒在了沙滩上
before collapsing in the sand.

By now he's suffering from a raging fever and is taken to a local monastic hospital.
根据一份临时记录表明
There, according to a contemporary report,

without the aid of God or man, he died,
最终离开了这个世界悲惨的就像他生时那般
as miserably as he'd lived.
那是因为后来教皇外甥Scipione Borghese做了一些事情
It's sometime later that the pope's nephew, Scipione Borghese,
最终接收了卡瓦拉乔用来赎罪的那些作品
finally receives the paintings with which Caravaggio had hoped to win his pardon.
红衣主教终于得以亲眼看到了
The cardinal finds himself face-to-face
这幅画家把自己画作歌♥利亚的作品
with the picture of the painter as the slain Goliath.
红衣主教对此并不甚习惯
The cardinal isn't used to this.
艺术家应该用天赋来为这个世界带来美好
Artists have been given their gift by God to bring beauty into the world,
应该让凡人能够接触到更高层次的自我
to put mortal creatures in touch with their higher selves.
事情应该是这样才对的
That's the way it was supposed to be.
但是看来卡瓦拉乔的做法根本就不对头
But Caravaggio never did anything the way it was supposed to be.
这张看上去好似活着的死人面庞在说话我来了
''Here I am'', says this dead face, which seems still alive.
他们说无论是谁只要把我的头送来就会受到奖赏
''They said whoever delivers my head will get a reward.
好吧我把自己送来了这样可以吗
''Well, I'm turning myself in, will that do?
我能得到奖赏吗我能得到宽恕吗
''Can I have my reward? Can I have my pardon?''
对不起红衣主教说道太迟了
''Sorry'', says the cardinal, ''So sorry. You're too late.''
