One of them was a brother. The other one was a cousin.

And the parents.
一家四口全都吸
They, all four, had both overdosed

on oxycodone.

sometimes 100 hours-plus a week

for two jobs, and the stuff I do see,

it does have a bad mix

and basically broke down crying.

And it spread like cancer.

Well, my first eight years was in Ohio,

And so maybe that had something to do with it.

I had four brothers and one sister.

Dad worked in the mines

till he blew out his lungs from black lung

and from asthma
还有大火就退休了
from being in belt fires.
我爸一直想让我上大学，我也想
Dad wanted me to go to college. I wanted to go.
我刚开始问他
I first asked him if I could

go into the mines like him, you know.
矿上给钱也挺多的，你说呢？
That paid good money.How about that, Dad
我爹说“娃啊”
He said, "No, Mark."
“你笨手笨脚的”
He says, "You're so clumsy,
“刚下矿就得上路啊”
you'll get killed the first shift."
所以我就跑去协和大学读书了
So I went to college at Concord University,

down in the southern part of the state of West Virginia

后来就去高中教
and got a degree to teach
生物和化学
biology and chemistry in high school.

But the first job that I got out of college

was a pharmaceutical job with Mead Johnson

about 1988.

I didn't know much about sales,

and I'm not even-- I wasn't even sure

that I would really stick with it or liked it,

but I came to be hired on with Purdue

when I was called by Mark Radcliffe,

who was my district manager.

He's pretty infamous right now.
去蹲联邦监狱了
He's been in a federal prison.

He called me and said, "If you work hard,

you'll make tremendous amounts of money."
无上限的奖金
Uncapped bonus.

That's what caught my ear, was uncapped bonus.
咱奖金没上限，不设限啊
There was no cap on it. No ceiling.
当时我就想”妈耶这活儿行啊
And I thought, "Well, that's the kind of money

I'd like to make."
我是从98年的四月开始的
I started in April of '98,

signing on to sell OxyContin primarily.

OxyContin was what they stressed

they wanted sales out of.

It was supposed to me that it was a veritable

treasure chest of untapped sales out there
因为有太多的人没有得到
because there were so many people

that were undertreated for pain,
或者说就没有治疗
or they weren't being treated at all
因为所有的医生都害怕
because physicians were afraid to use
去使用药效强的止痛药
stronger pain medications for them,
然后病人就遭了大罪
and they were suffering.
我能看到他们描述给我的使命
And I could see the mission being described to me,
我还真就信了
and then I signed onto it.
因为听起来真的是好事儿
It sounded like a very honorable thing to do.
帮助那些痛苦的人脱离苦海
Helping patients that were suffering from pain,
得到解脱，重新过上有意义的人生
get their relief, and give 'em their life back.
现在我们认为各种形式的痛苦
Today, we essentially consider pain
都是危险的
in any form to be dangerous,

that the experience of pain

leaves a kind of psychic scar.
