Our journey starts in the far south west,

in the oldest and strangest corner of the continent.

Here, the thirsty land is covered

with thousands upon thousands of circles.

We still don't know their origins.

Poisonous plants, foraging insects

and even magnetism have all been suggested,

but each ruled out.
那些圆圈不会移♥动♥ 亦不会变化
The circles don't move, and their shape never varies.
如同非洲这一片地区一样 亘古不变
They're unchanging, much like this part of Africa itself.
古老而又干旱 这片土地几乎从不降雨
Ancient and arid, it almost never rains on this land,
但却有水源存在 只是深深隐藏了
yet there is water here, hidden away.
想要在这里生存 所有生灵都必须使出各门绝活
To survive here, life must use every trick in the book.

冬天
Winter.
清晨的气温往往远低于零度
Dawn temperatures can fall well below freezing.
低温对这只卷尾燕来说是个大问题
And that's a problem for this drongo.
他的猎物 飞行昆虫 不会在寒冬出动
It's too cold for his normal prey, flying insects.
但他有个妙计
But he has a plan.
卷尾燕是喀拉哈里最伟大的骗术师
The drongo is the Kalahari's greatest trickster.
眼前便是他的受害者了
And these are his victims.
一个狐獴小家族 他们是沙漠专家
A family of meerkats, desert specialists.
在晨光下做完暖身运动后
After warming up in the morning sun,
狐獴们开始觅食早餐
the meerkats begin their search for breakfast.
此时 卷尾燕展开了他的骗局
The drongo can now begin his tricks.
但他必须先赢得受害者的信任
But he must first win the confidence of his victims.
他发现一只正在猎食的飞鹰 于是发出警报
He spots an eagle on the hunt, and sounds a warning,
狐獴们感激地涌向洞穴避险
one that sends the meerkats gratefully scurrying to safety.
危险过去了
Danger over.
现在他已经赢得了他们的信任
And now, he has their trust.
他又发出警报
He sounds another warning.
但是这次 却是假警报
But this time, it's a false alarm.

狐獴们上当了
The meerkats fell for it.
似乎易如反掌嘛 他于是故技重施
This all seems too easy. He tries the same trick again.
不过狐獴们也并不傻
But the meerkats aren't stupid,
他们只会上一次当
they'll only fall for it once.
可口的蝎子 他是没有口福享受了
The juicy scorpion won't be for him.
但突然间 狐獴哨兵的警报声响起
Then, suddenly, the sound of a sentry's warning.
狐獴们不能无视这警报
No meerkat can ignore that.
哨兵们绝不会骗人
Sentries never lie.
可是哨兵并未发现任何危险
But the sentry sees no danger.
猜猜是谁干的
Guess who?
当然 就是这只卷尾燕
Of course, it's the drongo.
他已学会模仿狐獴们的警报声
He's learnt to mimic the meerkats' own warning call.
现在 他可以慢慢享用战利品了
And now, he can enjoy his prize.
一群狐獴 败在一只鸟的计谋之下
A gang of meerkats, outsmarted by a bird.
卷尾燕只会在最难熬的寒冬才会使出诡计
The drongo is only deceitful in the hardest winter months.
其他时节 他都会提供值得信赖的保护
For the rest of the year, he provides honest protection.
因此 长远来看
So, in the long run,
狐獴家族与卷尾燕是互利互惠的
the meerkat family profit as well as the drongo.
而如果你尚未掌握生存诀窍
It's a much harder life,
那么生活将会艰苦得多
if you haven't yet learned the tricks of your trade.
这只幼豹才刚满一岁
This young leopard is just a year old,
正处于他生命中最关键的时期
and at a critical point in his life.
他的母亲已经竭力抚养两只幼崽
His mother has battled to raise her two cubs,
但现在她已经力不从心 很难捕获到足够的食物
but finding enough food for them is now beyond her.

From today, he'll have to fend for himself.

Kalahari means "Land of great thirst".
猎物稀少
Prey is scarce.

Of all the leopards in Africa,

these have to be the most resourceful.

A big warthog.

Potential prey,

but armed and dangerous.

Hungry and thirsty, he heads back home,

and spots a kill stashed in a tree,

And, like any teenager,

he thinks nothing of raiding her larder.

It's not really his day, is it?

Some young leopards grow up to be brilliant opportunists.

But even they find life hard here in the Kalahari.

These bizarre little birds are baby ostriches.

They're just a few days old.

Here, water is more often a mirage than reality.

It's now well over 40 degrees centigrade.

Their father shades his chicks from the midday sun.

No. The ostrich family is not alone out here.

Surrounded by miles of sun-baked mud,

sweet, fresh water wells up from deep below ground...

like a miracle.
