The sketches in the scores for Star Wars

are the most disjointed things you could imagine

because there were so many changes.

This was a minute and a half.

The next day, it was a minute and 45 seconds.

The next day it was out of the film.

And the late Ken Wannberg, who was my music editor,

drove me crazy with changes everyday.

I think the very last thing I wrote was the opening fanfare

and the brass march theme.

First time I heard parts of it was,

You know, all it is, is, uh, a rough piano rendition of the themes.

And so you have to say, "Well, I guess I don't know, but it sounds good to me."

But it's not-- Doesn't have any of the energy or the emotion

or anything that when you have a full orchestra playing it.

We decided that we needed to have a symphony orchestra to do this,

which I never had before in a film.
