巴塔哥尼亚横亘西边的智利
Patagonia straddles both Chile in the west
与东边的阿根廷
and Argentina to the east.
其最南端距离南极仅966公里
Its most southerly point lies only 600 miles from Antarctica.

跳岩企鹅
Rockhopper penguins.
每年春天 超过25万只企鹅在此上岸
Every spring, over a quarter of a million come ashore.
全都希望能够成家
All hoping to raise a family.
伴侣终生厮守
Couples pair for life
年复一年都回到相同的巢穴
and return to the same nest year after year.
父母会轮流照顾雏鸟
They take turns caring for their chicks.
今天是爸爸负责带小企鹅
And today, Dad is on duty.
它的雏鸟才孵化几天
His chick is just a few days old.
而且饥肠辘辘
And it's hungry.
可是这里没有食物
But there is no food here.
小企鹅必须等妈妈带食物回来
The chick must wait for Mom to return with a meal.
妈妈正在路上了
And she is on her way.
但要上岸就得冒生命危险
But getting ashore means risking her life.
在这片怪石嶙峋的海岸 没有轻松登陆的地点
On this jagged coast, there is no easy landing.
看来它安全上岸了
Looks like she made it.

A sea lion.
猎捕企鹅的掠食者
A penguin predator.
什么都比不过母亲的决心
There is no match for a mother's determination.
但是想要回家
To get home, however
还得先如字面那样
there's still a mountain to climb.

Literally.
母企鹅满肚子都是磷虾
And with a belly full of krill...
举步维艰
it's slow going.
一有失足
One wrong step and...
便回到原点
it's back to square one.
但妈妈可不愧对跳岩企鹅之名
But Mom's not called a rockhopper penguin for nothing.
强力的爪子
Strong claws
与锐利的喙
and a sharp beak
都善加利用
are put to good use.
现在它只需要找到自己的伴侣
Now, she just needs to find her partner.

成千上万只企鹅之中
amongst hundreds of thousands of penguins.

Her partner's unique call...
引领企鹅找到另一半
helps guide her to him.

Reunited.
终于到了晚餐时间
And at last, it's dinner time.
只有勇者才能在这儿养家
Only the courageous can raise a family down here.

And tomorrow, they must do it all again.

From Cape Horn, Patagonia's towering, rocky backbone

runs north for over a thousand miles.
天气狂暴又变幻莫测
The weather is ferocious and unpredictable.
但巴塔哥尼亚山地的代表就栖息在此
Yet, the symbol of Patagonia's mountains calls this place home.

In Patagonia's mountains
似乎一天内就能见到四季变化
it can seem like all four seasons in one day.

Life here is as hard as it gets.
这是一只雌美洲狮
This is a female puma
名叫佩塔卡
known as Petaca.
它是经验丰富的猎手
She's an experienced hunter.
但自从突然降雪
But since the sudden arrival of snow
它就难以捕获猎物
it's been difficult for her to make a kill.
一头原驼能让它饱餐一周
A guanaco could feed her for a week.
但要成功
But to succeed...
它得先接近猎物
she will need to get close.
在雪地里 它的毛色无法融入环境
In the snow, she's lost her camouflage.
所以它必须利用现有的任何遮蔽
So she must use whatever cover she can find.
这下它只能寄望于速度了
Now, speed is her only hope.

But in this deep snow

she is no match for the guanaco.
它今天得挨饿了
She'll go hungry today.

And so will her cubs.

At just four months old, they are entirely dependent on Mom.

They need a change in their fortunes.

And in these mountains, change is never far away.

Within days, the snow disappears.

Now, Petaca has her camouflage back.

And her speed.

She must get a firm grip on the neck.
一有闪失 被踹一脚就可能致命
If she gets it wrong, a single kick could be fatal.

It's now been a week since Petaca and her cubs last ate.

On the wind...

a scent.
是一具尸体
A carcass.
但这具尸体已经有主了
But it belongs to someone else.
跟另一只美洲狮起冲突
Conflict with another puma
恐会丧命
could be deadly.
佩塔卡冒着极大风险
Petaca is taking a huge risk.
但对方不是陌生美洲狮
But this is no stranger.
是佩塔卡的姐姐
It's Petaca's older sister...
带着两只较大的幼狮
with her two larger cubs.
而且它似乎乐于分享
And she seems happy to share.
学界向来认为美洲狮独来独往
Pumas have long been considered solitary.
但这样难得一见的相遇
But rarely seen encounters like these

reveal that they are far more social than we once thought.

Petaca's cubs aren't sure what to make of their cousins just yet.
