is reaching the end of a 250-mile journey.

she is a giant river turtle.

And she's not alone.

Tens of thousands of females

have synchronized their arrival.

Each year, the river waters drop

exposing beaches for just a few months.

And all these females have come here...

to lay their eggs.

Each one wants the best spot.

Too near the water the eggs might drown.
过于落单
Too isolated...
就会成为秃鹰盘中飧
and vultures will make a meal of them.
实在险象环生
There is a lot at stake.
母龟得挖两呎深
She has to dig 2ft down
湿度和温度才会恰到好处
where the humidity and the temperature are just right.
总算来到产卵时刻
Finally, it's time.
牠在巢中产下近百颗蛋
She lays close to a hundred eggs into her nest.
并小心埋起
And gently buries them.
现在牠和众母龟得返回河中
She and the others must now return to the river.
留下后代自求多福
Leaving their young to their own fate.
两个月后
Two months later...
蛋已孵化
the eggs have hatched.
幼龟体型极小
These baby turtles are tiny
比母亲小了三千倍
3,000 times smaller than their moms.
而且动弹不得
And they're trapped.
头顶的沙土已晒得太扎实
The sand above them has baked hard.
只有一样东西能解救牠们
There is only one thing that can free them.
沙土软化之际
As the sand softens
某种奇观也悄悄上演
something remarkable happens.
幼龟有如在互相对话
It sounds like the hatchlings are talking to one another.
彷佛说着 该出发了
They seem to be saying "It's time to go."
河滩上每个巢穴
And every nest on the beach
陆续敞开大门
begins to open.

Over a million tiny turtles
朝着河流匍匐前进
make their way towards the river.

And safety.
至少牠们这么以为
Or so they think.

On an Amazonian beach
百万只刚孵化的幼龟正朝河流前进
a million newly hatched turtles are heading for the river.
但是 此地盘踞着亚马逊体型最大的掠食者
But this is the realm of the Amazon's largest predator.

Huge black caiman.
幼龟别无选择
The hatchlings have no choice.
牠们必须抵达水中
They have to get to the water.
每只幼龟都得把握良机
Each must choose their own moment.
为数依旧壮观 可见幸存者占了多数
Their overwhelming numbers mean most do make it.
这群幸运儿有朝一日会重返旧地
The lucky ones will return here one day
产下自己的蛋
to lay their own eggs.
季节更迭 雨水随之到来
As the seasons turn and rains arrive
亚马逊诸河开始变化
the rivers of the Amazon change.

In some places they burst their banks...

creating a flooded forest.

In this new world
许多动物会爬上树求生
many animals take to the trees.

Others arrive to feed...

including infamous piranha.

Their razor-sharp teeth can strip a carcass to the bone.
在洪水上方
Above the floodwaters

extraordinary-looking hoatzin
每年都会挑此时节繁殖
choose this time of year to breed.
而亚马逊河豚
Whilst pink botos
世上最大的淡水豚
the largest river dolphins in the world
会透过声波在树梢枝干间猎食
use sound to hunt between the treetop branches.
洪水水位最高时
At their peak

the floodwaters cover an area larger than Montana
水深更能达到40呎
in water 40ft deep.
将丰富养分运至雨林深处
And they carry nutrients far into the rainforest.

The wealth of life in these rivers supports super-sized hunters...
大水獭
giant river otters.
其将近6呎的身长为世界之最
At nearly 6ft long, the world's biggest.
牠们也力大无穷
And, boy, are they powerful
强壮又敏捷
muscular and agile too.
每只大水獭一天会吃8磅重的鱼
Each one eats 8lbs of fish a day.
这还只是解解馋
These are just quick bites.
牠们需要更有份量的食物
They'll need something much more substantial
像是20磅重的眼点丽鲷
like 20-pound peacock bass.
这种鱼会躲在水中树枝间避险
The fish seek safety by hiding amongst submerged branches.
但大水獭会同心协力将其驱赶出来
But together, the otters flush them out...
并逼至浅水处
driving them into the shallows.
但并非整条鱼都会马上吃下肚
But not all this fish is going to be eaten right now.
大水獭家庭动身返回上游处
The family starts heading back upstream.

Someone has been missing out.
牠体型太小 无法参加狩猎
He's too small to join the hunt.
肚子也快饿扁了
And he's hungry.

There may be fish all around him

but pups don't think of them as food.

Yet.

This is just an adventure.

He's got a lot to learn.

I'm not sure this tapir is gonna be much help.

At last, his family has returned with the catch of the day.

That does look good.
牠可不会坐等饭来张口
And he's not going to wait to be offered it.
再过两个月 牠就得自行狩猎
In a couple of months he'll be hunting for himself.
