Oh, my God. We try and get them quiet

just so we can re-home them to domestic homes.

If they don't get handled, when you go to pick one up,

it'll spit and hiss at you,

whereas if you give them a bit of food

and get them used to human interaction

then they soon quieten down.

so you're not as stressed when you get your owners.

From humble beginnings on the farm,
哪怕是低微的农场出身
our cats can adapt to the lifestyle of a pampered pet.
猫咪们也能适应娇惯宠物的生活方式
But the extraordinary thing about the domestic cat
但家猫的一项非凡能力
is that it can easily switch back into a wild lifestyle.
就是它能轻易地切换回野性生活
The domestic cat, despite its name,
家猫尽管叫做家猫
is not actually a fully domesticated species.
但它是未完全驯化的物种
It retains a lot of the abilities of the wild ancestor,
它仍保留着野外祖先的许多能力
so that it can flip between
所以它能切换成
a fully-hunting, almost wild-type existence
全能猎手 几近野性的状态
to a very domesticated existence, curled up by somebody's fire,
或是十分温顺的家猫状态 蜷曲在某人的炉火旁
literally within a generation or two.
这种转变只需一两代便可
The domestic dog doesn't do at all well
驯化的狗就没法这样
if it's put into a feral lifestyle,
如果把它放入野外的生活
and doesn't reproduce particularly well, either.
它就不会很好地重现野性状态
So the domestic dog has gone down the whole way
所以家养狗已经彻底走了下来
to the end of domestication - fully domesticated.
已经完全被驯化了
The domestic cat is still perhaps only halfway.
而家猫可能仍只走了一半
And this is what makes our cats unique.
而这正使得猫咪们与众不同
From defending their territory...

..to the food they eat...
到他们的进食
..the structure of their bodies
到他们的身体结构
and the way they move...
再到他们的运动方式
we see their wild side every day.

But they've also learned to live with us

and that extraordinary advantage

has allowed them to become one of our favourite pets.
