我正在进行一次环绕地中海的旅行
I'm on a journey around the Mediterranean.

I take my flipping hat off to them, I really do.

They are on the edge of the Med.

It is a sea of wild extremes.

在旅行的第二程
On this second part of my journey,
我来到地中海东部地区
I am travelling around the eastern Mediterranean,
从塞浦路斯岛
from the island of Cyprus,
塞浦路斯
穿过大海 抵达黎巴嫩
across the sea to Lebanon
黎巴嫩
以色列
加沙
再来到以色列和加沙
and on to Israel and Gaza.

It's a region of awesome beauty and extreme landscapes...

I am up a mountain,

on an island in the middle of the Mediterranean

and I'm starting this leg of my journey in Cyprus!

Part of the reason I wanted to come up here, into the mountains,

is because I think most of us think of

Cyprus as being a place for summer sun,

but there is a whole world of life up here,

well away from the beaches.

At the eastern end of the Mediterranean,

Cyprus has sat at the crossroads of civilisations,

helped seize power on the island.

The Turkish Army then invaded the north,

ostensibly to protect Turkish Cypriots.

There was hand-to-hand and street-to-street fighting,

followed by the division of the island.
