The arrival of new baby Joseph turned Diggy's world upside down.
新宝宝的到来让小迪的生活天翻地覆
I think he felt pushed out by the new baby.
我觉得他感受到了新宝宝的压♥迫♥了
He suddenly wasn't getting the attention he used to get.
他突然失去了以往的受关注
The food was suddenly put into a different place
食物也突然被挪到了别的地方
so that the baby wouldn't be near it,
好让宝宝碰不到
doors were closed and he wasn't allowed in certain rooms,
门也关了 他不能进某些房♥间了
so I think he suddenly felt like the house wasn't his any more.
所以他可能突然觉得这家不再是他的了
And one final disruption on Diggy's home turf
对小迪家园的最后一项干扰
proved to be the last straw.
成了压倒骆驼的最后一根草
My brother visited about six months ago and brought his dog...
我兄弟六个月前来访 并带来了只狗
..Diggy's ears instantly pricked up,
小迪的耳朵马上就听到了
didn't like the smells, really nervous,

ran straight out.

I didn't think we were ever going to see him again.

I thought that was it, he was gone.

It took Diggy five days to return

and he now spends very little time at home.

We wanted to find where he WAS going

and so we've been tracking his movements.

His GPS results showed that

he travels up to two miles a day around the village,

visiting Kali's house and others.

And he spends almost two thirds of his time away from his actual home.

was enough to push him into seeking out new territory.

To find out, I've come to Lincoln to visit Sarah Ellis and her two cats.

I think the fact is there's so much change that's happened for Diggy.

Cats are attached to a place.

They'll have a core territory within the home,

but if they feel that there's lots and lots of changes going on

and some potential changes that they feel quite threatening,

a cat will leave home and find a new territory

where it feels it can set up base that's more secure.

In a couple of weeks, Sarah's cats are going to face

the same territorial invasion as Diggy as her own baby is due.

But she has a plan.

She's going to use the way our cats sense

and interpret the world to prepare them.

First, she's tapping in to their love of high places.

So these new resting sites that you can see

that they're enjoying at the moment.

They're new and they're really important, they're up high,

so when the baby gets older, he can't access the cats,

they've got a safe place that they can get to.

She's also exploiting their incredible sense of smell.

We rub cloths on the cat's facial glands,

where they secrete these chemical signals

and we rub those onto the new items that are coming in.

A buggy and a cot, etc.

So, for them, that gives them the impression

that they are already part of their environment

and they feel much more safe and secure around them.

And she's even preparing their extremely sensitive ears

to a noise they're going to be hearing a lot of.

It's quite a high pitched noise

so we've started to desensitise them to that sound.
所以我们开始让他们适应那噪声

It'll probably stress me out more than it will the cats.
我估计我会比猫还要有压力了
And you can see his ears are moving ever so slightly

which we would expect but he's not in the least bit worried,

very relaxed.

For me, it's really reassuring to know that

we're giving them the best chance of coping when the baby comes.

So our cats can cope with change

but you have to introduce it to them gently.

And that's no surprise.

We've only been treating our cats as pets

for the last hundred years or so

and since then, our lives have changed much faster

than their evolution can keep up with.

We have pets with the senses of wild predators.

Our kitten Monty is now almost five months old

and it's a really big day today

because it's the first time he's going to be stepping outside.

Very cautious, as he should be, this is brand-new territory for him.

Monty's experiencing this whole new territory of his

using the senses of his solitary hunter ancestors.

And the more we understand what the world looks like through our cats' eyes,

the more we can help them along on their journey
