The cat realises the mouse is within his grasp

One of the things that makes them so good at hearing different sounds

is these huge ears that they have.

These structures are called pinnae and they can use those as amplifiers

to really boost sound.

Our ears are pretty fixed on the side of our head here,

One of the ways is how quickly the sound comes to each ear.

So there'll be a time delay... A tiny time delay, though.

but they have a huge number of neurons that go from the ear

Our cats' ears also far surpass our own in the range of sounds

they can hear, about 11 octaves in total,

a wider range than almost any other mammal.

They can hear, if we think about low frequencies,

And that range is what we would call ultrasound.

And that's great because they've adapted really well

This gives our cats access to a whole world of sound

To see this in action, we've used specialist equipment

to transmit ultrasonic calls from mice, rats and bats

inside the houses of some of the cats in our study.

The sounds are all above 22 kilohertz

It takes less than a minute for them to locate the source of the sounds.

It's only by lowering the frequency that we can enter the cat's world

Our cats' well-honed senses evolved to equip their wild ancestor
