with animal life caught in the crossfire.
Armageddon has arrived,
Earth will never be the same.
It's three hundred seventy seven million years ago,
and an enemy from within a super-plume of boiling rock is laying siege to our planet.
Disasters like this forged the world as we know it now.
Have this cataclysm not happened, Earth would be very different.
At ground zero, near what is now Siberia,
a thriving Animal Kingdom has been reduced to rubble.
And this is just the beginning.
The enemy is expanding its hold into a ring of fire, thousands of miles in diameter.
Not only did we have some volcanic eruptions with lava flows,
we also had greater rates of plate tectonic activate.
So a lot more seafloor spreading is going on,
formation of new oceanic crust, submarine volcanism occurring.
But the Earth's crust is not the only crashed,
the superplume is also poisoning the oceans.
Once the hot lava interacts with seawater,
can generate a lot of potentially toxic compounds within the in the seawater.
You would have had a lot of metals for instance,
like silver, gold, chromium, iron, magnesium and so on.
But contamination spreads like radiation after an atomic blast.
New life is the most vulnerable.
In Southern Italy,
it is spawning season for Eusthenopteron.
Like modern-day salmon,
thousand journey here every year to breed.
These agile creditors are nearly as big as a man,
and have a nasty bite.
They're called lobe-finned fish,
because of their stubby fins precursors to actual limbs.
The lobe-finned fishes of the time during the Devonian,
had lambs much more like our limbs in terms of being robust.
During spawning season,
all the Eusthenopterons from miles around gathered.
They have no clue disaster has struck.
The only thing on their minds is finding an attractive mate.
Females release eggs and males fertilize them.
But in these toxic seas larvae quickly die.
Slowly this will chip away at their population,
until finally they are gone for good.
It is now eight thousand years since the war began,
the blink of an eye in the time scale of a mass extinction.
The oceans are locked in a life and death struggle,
but now death spreads to the atmosphere.
The enemy below releases billions of tons of toxic gas,
mostly carbon dioxide.
Slowly, but surely the air grows thick with greenhouse gases.
Temperature spike.
Ocean currents grind to a halt.
We drives currents in the modern day is heat redistribution.
The warm tropics try to make their way up to the clod,
the cold arctic ties a warm itself by heading down to the tropics,
that causes water currents to causes great wind.
If you have a worm pole and warm tropics,
there's nothing driving current, there's nothing driving wind.
The world goes stagnant.
All around the globe, death takes a smothering paw.
We really could posit the world temperatures went up,
we're seeing a huge run up in temperature.
The oceans are an astonishing 90 degrees Fahrenheit at the equator,
a dramatic increase of 20 degrees,
the sea is dying.
So we're talking hot tip temperatures here,
that would have been far beyond the envelope of survivability for these reefs.
because these reefs that developed in water temperatures that were you know much much cooler.
It seems mother Earth may be losing the war,
and if this war is lost,
and an incredible breakthrough may never happen.
Our ancestors transition from water to land.
These creatures
including a remarkable fish called Tiktaalik,
are starting to sense the change in their world.
In the riverbeds of what is now Greenland,
they know that as temperatures rise, their homes are evaporating.
But they have a defense.
A revolutionary adaptation that may help them survive, the apocalypse.
Sensing the danger, this family sets out on a long journey.
But their exodus takes them where no aquatic animal has ever gone,
out of the water.
Primitive air breathing lungs kick in.
Simple wrist bones propel them off the ground.
This amazing creature is the first vertebrate to walk on land.
This is just the advantage they need to survive an ordeal,
that will last for thousands of years.
Tiktaalik is a perfect link
between the truly aquatic fish and the earliest amphibians on land.
Here we're seeing a fish that is moving towards this tetra-pod,
four-legged condition,
from its four legs we can see for the very first time
how the bones are going to work themselves into the humerus, the radius of four arms.
So Tiktaalik is this great great discovery in the history of paleontology for many reasons.
Tiktaalik has many never-before-seen
traits key for living on land,
a flattened head with eyes on top,
immovable neck,
and strong but flexible appendages.
One of the cool things about Tiktaalik
is that it also has a series of bony bars in this throat region,
that in modern fishes support the series of gill filaments for gill's respiration.
So quite literally like modern lungfish, as well as sturgeon and salmon,
and a variety of other living forms.
Tiktaalik was quite literally a double breather,
it could breathe using both gills as well as lung.
But in the grip of mass extinction, Tiktaalik survival isn't a sure thing.
Runaway global warming will force them to wander,
always searching for a stable home to feed, reproduce and raise their young.
It certainly would have been a great advantage for any Devonian fish
to be able to move from one nasty pond
to perhaps a bigger less nasty pond.
Through insects were on the land, lots of scorpions,
centipedes, millipedes, lots of bugs.
and if you're a fish and you're trying to make it from one pond to another and just on the way,
Oh my gosh, fish food.
And you munch up a couple of these guys all of the better.
So getting out would have been protection,
getting out would have been getting you to maybe a new place to reproduce.
But getting out would have given you a new food source.
Tiktaalik may have some traction in this changing world,
but it's still just one breath away from extinction.
One false move and the whole species will be gone,
and our own existence would disappear with it.
Other freshwater inhabitants are not so well adapted.
Including Bothriolepis,
one of the most abundant fish in the world.
Bothriolepis it is my best vision of what the fish in a suit of armor with look like,
or a fish that thinks it's a lobster would look like.
They would not have won any speed derby of any sort.
And the other hand, it would have been armored to the point that it would been very difficult to kill it.
But this well-protected creature is vulnerable to the changing environment.
