接着它们的数量很快就开始成倍地激增
and their populations quickly multiply.
就在这时出现了很多小型哺乳类动物
There are lots of little mammals,
因为突然没有任何生物能够逼迫它们留在洞里
because suddenly nothing's forcing mistake in their burrows.
没有成群的小驰龙或是霸王龙宝宝
There aren't packs of little dromaeosaurs and there aren't little baby Tyrannosaurus
随时跑过来要吃掉它们
running around, trying to scar from up all the time.
乌龟会把自己埋在很深的泥巴坑里
Turtle themselves dig well deep into the mud,
或许就在看到第一道闪光之时
perhaps with the first flash,
远古的乌龟发现了不对劲
some early turtle goes,
诶呀这下可不得了了它们赶紧沉入水池底部
uh-oh, down at the bottom of a pond,
然后在水池底部拼命刨洞不停地挖
into the side, dig in dig in dig in.
有一些就这样存活了下来
And some survive,
鳄鱼也同样如此
the same with the crocs.
但是温血动物的状况就很糟糕
But the warm-blooded animals did terribly,
如果有人相信恐龙是温血动物
If we believe the dinosaurs were warm-blooded,
那我也相信
I have to.
它们体型庞大而且还是温血动物
they are large and warm-blooded meeting,
这就意味着它们随时随地都需要大量的食物
they needed a lot of food all the time.
如果是温血动物的话就没办法做到真正的冬眠
You cannot really hibernate well if you're a warm-blood.
对我们的古老祖先普尔加托里猴来说
For our ancient ancestor Purgatorius,
这是新一天的美好黎明
it's the dawn of a whole new day.
以前它们只能在晚上出来吃腐肉
Once they only scavenge by night,
到了现在它们可以大胆地在大地上四处溜达
now they can venture out anytime without fear.
以前的它们曾经是恐龙的猎物
Once prey for the dinosaurs,
到了现在它们要准备好接管整个世界
they are now poised to take over.
这种温顺的动物最终接管了地球
The meek really have inherited the Earth.
小行星撞击是地球生命史上
The asteroid impact was the greatest single game changer
最大的一起改变生存游戏规则的单一事件
in the history of life on Earth.
有谁敢说这不会再次发生？
and who's to say it couldn't happen again?
我想这提高了随机事件在地球历史上的重要性
I think it winds up the importance of random events in Earth's history.
有些事件是注定要发生的
Some things are destined to happen,
有此事情是不能被改变或避免的
some things are not able to be avoided or changed,
有些事情就是随机出现的晴天霹雳
and some things are just random bolt out of the boom.
现代科技应该能够预见小行星撞击地球
While modern technology would likely see another asteroid strike coming.
但是我们还是没有办法去阻止它
There's still nothing we could do to stop it.
一个统治地球长达一亿五千万年的王国
A kingdom that ruled for 150 million years
在一年之内就被完全推♥翻♥了
was wiped out in one.
人类能否面对类似的大灾难
Could humanity survive a similar catastrophe?
或许这个问题最好还是不要有所解答
Perhaps it's a question best left unanswered.
