玩三明治
我今天晚饭在报亭
I was in the paper shop this dinner time
买♥♥了点甘草糖
getting some liquorice allsorts.
给我点单的人说"真希望我和你一样"
Man serving me says, "I wish I was like you."
然后和女人说"我真希望我和他一样
Shouted out to the woman, "I wish I was him.
买♥♥糖不胖" 我说"对我很走运
"Always buying sweets, never gets fat." I said, "Yes, I'm lucky.
我骑单车的" 她说"对我见过你
"Only I cycle." She said, "Yes, I've seen you.
你是公园管理"
"You work for the Parks Department."
他说"你以前不是喜欢棒棒糖吗" 我说"不"
He said, "Weren't you a lollipop man once?" I said, "No."
他说"我应该见过你站在交叉路口"
He said, "I thought I'd seen you, stood at the crossing."
那里堆满了杂♥志♥
Racks and racks of magazines.
不停地有人来来回♥回♥
Always men in there, looking.
珍妮特正在做双胞胎的洗礼服
Janet was dressmaking, doing the twins' christening frocks.
我说"他们让你精疲力尽珍妮特
I said, "They put on you, Janet.

"Before these frocks,
能跟人聊上半天"
"there's been no word for long enough."

She said, "Well, whose fault is that?"

Apricot satin, little buttons down the front.

Mr Trickett nosing round this afternoon at what he calls

"grassroots level" ordains a blitz

Privet mostly, all stinking of urine

and clogged up with every sort of filth.

Sheaths, jam-rags, a shoe,

some tights, sick, dog muck.

They come over the wall on a night
流浪汉半夜来干的
after The Woodman's turned out,
他们醉醺醺地把垃圾扔得到处都是还胡搞
lie down drunk in all that stench and filth and do it.
他们还会在操场上胡搞
They do it in the playground, too,
躺在滑梯底部
laid down over one end of the slide
那可是孩子们屁♥股♥滑下来的地方
where the kiddies slide along on their bottoms,
他们还把罪证留得到处都是
then just chuck the evidence down anywhere.
库玛先生推着推车和扫帚来的时候
I'm nearly finished when Mr Kumar stops with his barrow
我都快收拾好了我们一起回到了院子里
and brushes and we walk back to the yard together.
他来自孟买♥♥
He's from Bombay.
他生来就是扫大街的他们说他碰不得
Born a street sweeper, apparently, what they call an untouchable.
一直在想把他妻子从印度接过来
Going on about getting his wife over from India.

Said he found some decent digs in the Brudenells

only a person from Liverpool comes
半夜踹坏了门
and kicks the door in in the middle of the night.

Thinks the English don't like the Indians,

says the only Indians the English like are the Gurkhas.
廓尔喀雇佣兵会砍掉人的脑袋
The Gurkhas cut people's heads off
所以他们是地球中坚
so that makes them the salt of the Earth.
我经过办公室的时候帕林先生叫我进去说
As I'm going by the office, Mr Parlane calls me in and says
他听说了韦克菲尔德但他们还是找不到我的记录
he's heard from Wakefield, but they still can't trace my records.
工头晚餐主管喜欢棒棒糖的人
Foreman, dinner supervisor, lollipop man,
我肯定会留下一些记录的
I must have left some trace,
问我上报的信息是否有误
was I sure I'd got all the digits right?
于是我又报了一遍号♥码他说
So I reeled the number off again and he said,
"我去庞特弗拉克试试威尔弗雷德
"Well, I'll try Pontefract, Wilfred,
但已经过了六个月了"
"but it's been six months now."
我推着自行车绕了一大圈
I took the long way round, pushing the bike.
只有一个小孩坐在秋千上
Just one kiddy by herself on the swings.
黑人小孩白人妈妈
Kiddy, black. Mother, white.
抽着烟在边上看着
Having a cig, watching.
我不喜欢复杂的人际我从来不会那样
I don't like a cargo of relations, I never have.
我不是很想去参加洗礼
I wasn't particular to go to the christening,
只是珍妮特想看看她做的衣服怎么样
only Janet wanted to see what her frocks looked like on,
她说了
and anyway, as she said,
巴里和伊冯有什么好看不起人的
who are Barry and Yvonne to look down their nose?

Their Martin's been had up twice for drunken driving.

Slight hiccup round the front because,

the church does tend to insist

We're all standing around looking stumped when little Rosalie,

who's seven, pipes up and says,

"Why can't Uncle Wilfred be it? He's my godfather."

Barry straight off clouts her - only the priest,
看起来也就不到17岁好像是个新来的说
who doesn't look much more than 17 and new to the parish says,
"那威尔弗雷德叔叔可以吗"
"Would Uncle Wilfred be a possible solution?"
我什么都没说伊冯马上接话道
I don't say anything at all, only Yvonne gets in quick,
"不威尔弗雷德不行因为..."
"No, Wilfred wouldn't be a possible solution because..."
珍妮特看着她
And Janet looks at her.
"因为他们现在没有车"
"..because they're not currently motorised."
那个年轻的牧师好像想说
The priest lad looks as if he's about to say that
有没有车子和教父无关
wheels aren't part of the job description
这时伊冯看到了格林伍德爷爷
when Yvonne spots Grandpa Greenwood
他正要去上厕所呢她说"他可以"
who's just been out to spend a penny and says, "He'll do."
牧师说"他是不是有些老了"
The priest says, "Isn't he a bit on the old side?"
她说"没有
She says, "No, he isn't.
他还健壮得很"
"He still goes ballroom dancing."
所以最后就选择了他
So it ends up being him.
我对珍妮特说"知道洛林宝宝不会讨厌
I said to Janet, "Well at least baby Lorraine won't have any
《军人两步走》了"
"problems with the Military Two-step."
然后我们都去了舍伍德路
Afterwards, we adjourn to Sherwood Road
彼得和格洛丽亚准备了些什么
where Pete and Gloria had laid something on,
好像都是些啤酒
beer chiefly by the looks of it.

where the women end up in one room

and the men in another.

There's kiddies all over the place, though,

and what with Pete's Alsatian plunging around, sheer bedlam.

That's irresponsible in my view,
竟然在有孩子的地方带这么大的狗
a dog that size when there's kiddies about.

One snap and they're scarred for life.
和孩子们倒是玩得很开心
A lot of larking about with the children,
巴里把他的两个孩子扔到空中
Barry throwing their two up in the air
逗他们尖叫假装要扔一个给我但其实没有
till they screamed then pretends to throw one to me but doesn't.
姜汁啤酒手指饼
Ginger tash. Big fingers.
那地方做了点装♥修♥
Does a bit of decorating now and then,
他年青的时候进过看守所
was in a remand home when he was young.
彼得就开始说他所谓的笑话
Then Pete starts telling his so-called jokes.
"好了你更愿意选哪个维尔福
"Now then, which would you rather have, Wilf,
一千个只有一英镑的女人
"a thousand women with one pound
还是一个有一千英镑的女人"
"or one woman with a thousand pound?"
巴里说 "都不要"
"Else neither," says Barry
我看到他挤了挤眼睛但我没说什么
and I saw him wink but I didn't take on.
我想去还是去帮忙洗碗吧
So I thought I'd go and help wash up,
但是过了一会儿厨房♥里的女人
only no sooner were all the women in the kitchen
都能听到珍妮特开始说她的子♥宫♥传奇
when Janet has to embark on the saga of her womb,
说我们本来可以有孩子的
how we could have had children
但是角度错了
only the angle of it was wrong.
伊冯插话说"不是你的角度亲爱的
So Yvonne chips in, "It's not your angle, love,
重要的是他的角度"
"it's his that matters."
大家就开始吃吃地笑
So there's lots of smutty laughter
我就走出来坐在后面的台阶上
and I go out and sit on the back step.
小罗莎莉正在院子里玩
Little Rosalie's playing in the yard,
把她的球往墙上扔一边拍手
throwing her ball against the wall, clapping her hands
一边踢腿什么的
and lifting her leg to throw it under and all that.
她玩累了后就过来坐在台阶上
When she stops, she comes and sits on the step
我说 "我觉得
and I say, "I think
该奖励你一块糖罗莎莉"
"that deserves a sweet, Rosalie,"
然后给了她一块甘草糖
and give her a liquorice allsort.
突然间窗户上传来一阵巨响
Suddenly there's a banging in the window
