the auctioneer's men, who were all so polite and careful

I could have married any one of them on the spot.
安吉拉抱怨这么多商人来了之后
Angela beefing on about all the dealers being here,
把价格提高了我想着干得好
putting up the prices. I thought, "Good job."
但不管它们能卖♥♥多少钱
Still, however much it all fetches,
都是沧海一粟
it'll only be a drop in the ocean.
有一刻安吉拉把达顿一家拉到角落里
At one point, Angela got the Duttons in the corner
开始编悲惨故事
and started telling the tale.
说贾尔斯一直都是坏人
Said Giles had always been a wrong 'un.
我转身说她并不了解
I turned round and said she didn't know
自己在说什么
what she was talking about,
那是一个彻头彻尾的误会
it had been a genuine mistake.
她说 "误会
She said, "Mistake?
几百人丢掉了毕生积蓄这是误会"
"Hundreds of people losing their life savings a mistake?"
我说 "不然你以为我为什么要变卖♥♥一切呢"
I said, "So why do you think I'm selling up?"
她说 "那又不是你的错你何必受这个苦呢
She said, "It wasn't your fault. Why should you suffer?
我就担心这一点穆丽尔这对你不公平"
"That's what worries me, Muriel. It's not fair on you."
不管对我公不公平都没影响她买♥♥下我的角柜
Fair on me or not, it didn't stop her buying the corner cupboard.
她说她好多年前就看上那角柜了
She's had her eye on that for years.
我想贾尔斯确实是个淘气鬼
I suppose Giles has been a scamp...
但他不算邪恶
..but I don't think he's been wicked.
就不是很灵光而已
Just...not very bright, that's all.
但斯隆街在皮帕名下这是件好事
Still, Sloane Street is in Pippa's name so that's a blessing,
她的学费好多年前就交完了
and the school fees were covenanted
所以也并不是全无希望
for years ago so... not all gloom.
我坐在栗树下那边正在拍卖♥♥
I sat under the chestnut tree while the sale was going on
想着如果拉尔夫不死
and thought how none of this would have happened

if Ralph hadn't died.

Then I heard him say, "Buck up, old girl,"

and went and gave a hand with the tea.

I haven't told Margaret yet.

Her 14-year-old psychiatrist thinks this may not be the moment.

Sees some signs of improvement.
上周玛格丽特给他带了几支郁金香
Margaret brought him some tulips last week.
从医院的花坛里摘的
Picked them from one of the hospital flowerbeds.

I apologised and said I could give them some of our bulbs.

Took the dogs up the hill later on.

They're next, I suppose.
该死的精神病医生
Bloody psychiatrist.
今早天刚亮的时候
Crack of dawn this morning,
我翻出了我信赖的绿色泳衣
I routed out my trusty green cossie
然后享受了半小时拥抱波浪的快乐时光
and spent a happy half-hour breasting the billows.
旧泳衣也曾经辉煌过
The old cossy's seen better days
后来蛾子把它蛀掉了
and the moth has got into the bust,
但只有一两个人在遛狗
but as the only people about were one or two brave souls
我不害怕一堆人
walking a dog, I didn't frighten the troops.
回来的时候我饿极了所以我在灶上煮了一个鸡蛋
Came back hungry as a hunter so boiled myself an egg on the ring
就着高纤麦饼吃了坐在窗边
and had it with a slice of Ryvita, sitting in the window.
太阳刚刚照着窗户一小时太好了
Sun just catches it for an hour then. Lovely.
我整理了房♥间做了一两件事
I tidied the room, did one or two jobs,
然后走路去图书馆
and then toddled along to the library...
绕着博姿走了一圈
..had a walk round Boots...
这时已经该吃午饭了
..by which time it was getting on for lunchtime.
时间飞逝
It's surprising how time does go.
我想到我之前熬过的事情
When I think of what I used to get through in the old days...
真不知道我是怎么做到的
..I wonder how I did it.
我搬到这里差不多有一个月了
I've been here about a month now.

Got onto it via an advert in The Lady.
它叫斯莱德米尔
Sledmere, it's called.

现在是淡季价格很合理
Off season, of course, and quite reasonable.
我还没探索过镇上
I haven't quite got the town sorted out yet.

I feel sure there must be a community here,

I had a word with a young woman at the town hall.

She wanted to know if I was interested in Meals On Wheels.

I said, "Rather!

but brains available to be picked at any time."
她有点不感兴趣
She looked a bit blank.
她其实是想知道
Turns out she wanted to know
我想不想加入接受食物的一方
if I was interested in being on the receiving end.
我说 "这辈子都别想"
I said, "Not on your life!"
但我懂她什么意思这老太婆不如当年了
But message received and understood - the old girl's past it.
所以我才去游泳吧
Hence the swim, I suppose.
但我依然迎难而上
Still, I soldier on
现在我也不孤独
and it's not quite orphans of the storm time.
我每天会去商店
I look round the shops most days
如果幸运的话我会碰到安吉拉·格莱斯皮
and, if I'm lucky, I run into Angela Gillespie,
她让她妈妈住在那里的养老院
who's got her mother in a home here
时不时来看看
and comes over from time to time.
我们会一起喝咖啡唠叨唠叨过去
We have coffee and a natter about the old days,
但太频繁的话我可做不来
though I can't do that too often.
现如今早上喝咖啡太贵了
Morning coffee these days seems to cost a king's ransom.
我根本不必喝咖啡
And with me, there doesn't have to be coffee.
我跟谁都能聊
I can talk to anybody.
有天早上
The other morning,
我跟一个穿橘黄色的年轻人聊天
I got talking with one of these young men in orange
他们在附近敲铃鼓
who bang their tambourines in the precinct.
他走向我敲着碗剃着光头
Came over to me, rattling his bowl, shaven head,
但在其他方面很明智
but otherwise quite sensible.
他觉得生活就是一场准备
His view is that life is a kind of prep.

Thinks we're being buffed up for a better role next time.

Sensible as anything else, I suppose.

I said, "Well, I just hope it's not in Hunstanton!"

The big, bright spot on the horizon is Margaret.
她好多了减重好多
Heaps better. Lost a lot of weight,
摆脱了那件可怕的开衫
got rid of that dreadful cardigan
现在是一个很漂亮的年轻女人
and now is quite a good-looking young woman.
现在还住在旅馆里
In a hostel up to pres.
但计划着租一间小公♥寓♥
but planning on getting a small flat.
上周过来说下一次
Came down last week and says next time,
可能就是自己开车来了
it could be under her own steam.
十天后要考驾考
Takes her driving test in ten days.
真是奇迹
Miracle.
她带我出去吃午饭就像正常女孩一样
She took me out to lunch, just like a normal girl.
谈到了拉尔夫之类的
Talked about Ralph etc.
不怪他
Doesn't blame him.
要是他还活着就好了
Wishes he were alive.
我不知道我怎么想
I don't know what I think.
大概为他遗憾吧
Sorry for him, I suppose.
她付了账留了小费
She paid the bill, left a tip,
自然得好像她一辈子都在这样做
just as if she'd been doing it all her life.
当然她会很富有拉尔夫限制得很好
Of course, she'll be nicely off now - Ralph tied it all up
