The Story of Sarah Records
Sarah
Anyone that was doing music of the sort that we were
wanted to be on Sarah before they were on anything else
Sarah
I trusted the label so much
I would buy anything they put out
There were Sarah gigs
there were Sarah tours
Sarah
So we would go on tour with Brighter
我们和Brighter
and The Field Mice and Heavenly
The Field Mice、Heavenly
I mean what a great bill
Sarah had a lot of anoraks
that followed the bands around
I think that's brilliant because
they really cared about what they were saying
and what they were doing
做什么
Just where we lived didn't seem to matter
when it came to a Sarah gig
We'd travel
I always appreciate in music
anything that's done with passion
I always have a real sympathy for people
who feel they're outside of the norm
You can't romanticise something
that wasn't good
It is the closest record label to perfection
that I've ever come across
There was a reason why people
were like so such obsessive completists
It was about being part of something and
you can join in too if you want
If you see that someone's got like
a Sarah Record 7" it's like Oh!
My Secret World, The Story of Sarah Records
I think one thing that I'm always amazed by
is that I ever ended up running a record label
because if you ask anybody who
knew me when I was growing up
I was the shyest
least likely person to ever get involved
in anything that had any sort of public profile
I don't think I was an unhappy teenager
hut I think I quite liked
playing with miserabllism
The Smiths were probably invented for me
The Smiths
I certainly you know wore a lot of black
I think for people of my age
you know John Peel was the only
real source of hearing new music
because at that time Radio 1 I think
Radio 1
used to go off air at 7 o'clock
in the evening and go over to Radio 2
Radio 2
and then John Peel used to come hack
on again at 10 o'clock at night
So anybody that was into
any sort of alternative, interesting, different music
if you didn't listen to John Peel
John Peel
you would never hear it
His presence as a person on the radio
and I think that's true for a lot of people
It was never just about the music
it was always about listening to John Peel as well
and that someone else
playing the exact same music
wouldn't have been quite the same thing
so it was always sort of my mum trying
to get me to turn it off
and make sure I wasn't listening under the bed clothes and stuff
Those John Peel shows
I mean it was bands like
Echo and The Bunnymen
Teardrop Explodes, Gang of Four
it was that sort of
Joy Division obviously
Joy Division
it was that sort of era and then
suddenly hearing Orange Juice I think
Orange Juice
was the sudden thought that
maybe I could be involved with a scene like this
These sound like the sort of people that
I could sort of meet and talk to
and get on with
I went to see the Alarm a lot
I mean they were sort of my first loves
And I'm not a fan of the music any more
but I loved the politics of them
and I loved the fact that they deliberately
made themselves so accessible to the fans
so you could always go and
talk to them afterwards
Which you know for first real love of a band
to be someone you could go and talk to was
quite amazing really I think so
I think that sort of formed quite a lot of my principles
about what music should be like really
I mean having grown up in London
I knew I couldn't live anywhere small
I didn't want to go to university in a
relatively small city or town
Bristol I know I liked the countryside around it
I like the sort of maritime aspect
I like the river
and I like the fact that it's always seemed
slightly quirky and slightly different
The big event for me was finding out
that the guy who was living next door to me in the halls of residence at Bristol
was into virtually the same music as me
and we would sort of egg each other on
and go to gig's together and buy records
and talk about them
And then I think one day we saw a piece in
I think it was the NME
about a fanzine called Hungry Beat
and this was in the era
of the sort of first Creation bands
Creation
Sort of Jasmine Minks, Biff Bang Pow!
Jasmine Minks、Biff Bang Pow!
People like that
So we sent off for this fanzine
and just thought that was fantastic
because it was writing about all these bands that we loved
and we thought we could do something like this
That whole sort of like explosion
of fanzines in the 80's was partly to do
with the actual inability of the London music press
to actually get off their arses
and come to you know
the provinces
Without the internet it was
really hard to find out about stuff that you might like
You basically had John Peel and fanzines
essentially were the two ways
that you could actually find out about stuff that was below
the level that the NME was writing about
