Erik came from Chicago ten years ago,

to begin the world's first study of silkies.

It's a far cry from home.

Every morning,leeches on the eyeballs,

scorpions in the toilet

and poisonous centipedes dangling from the bungalows.

Those would be the top three joys of working here.

Many would have given up,but he's braved the isolation,

Before Erik arrived,nothing was known about silkies.

He's trying to discover the basics of their behaviour

We've got the adult male,

He's only been around for about two years.

and we needed that in the first year to help us find the group.

They almost look like little rodents,

But silkies are the rarest of them all.

Silky sifakas are an extremely critically endangered animal,

and there are only possibly as few as a few hundred

remaining in just a small corner of north-eastern Madagascar.

And their diet is so complex - it's over 150 species,
