The basal ganglia and the thalamus, these are areas thought to be

Descartes tried to explain how the soul could somehow exist within the body,

The idea that they exist side by side

Although Descartes' remains were eventually returned to France,

this memorial statue acknowledges his legacy.

For Descartes,

everything in the world was divided into two types of stuff.

There was the material world -

physical stuff like the brain,

which you could explain with physical laws.

And then there was the mental stuff -

things like the mind,

and the defining characteristic of the mind for Descartes was thought.

So for Descartes, the mind was really separate from the brain.

And this is what gave rise to the thing we now call "dualism".

Descartes's dualism for body and soul

is no longer exerts the same power as it did in his day.

But that's not to say that dualism has gone away.

we talk about the separation of body and mind.

This secular dualism between mind and body is popular

perhaps because it feels, intuitively, to be correct.

When I was younger I used to sing in a Church choir.

Well, the reason I have come to Sweden is to meet a scientist

He's gathering evidence that explains away
