I'm a mathematician.

It's a job that involves a fair amount of problem solving.

But I couldn't tell you where even my biggest ideas come from.

20 years ago I was making the same journey

that I am now, from Paddington to Oxford.

I was a PhD student at the time, doing my PhD in mathematics.

I was really stuck on this thorny problem. I had been working on it

Realising I had cracked this problem that I'd been working on,

It somehow came from gazing out the window, thinking about nothing, I thought.

I think I'm a pretty regular 43-year-old man.

I work in Oxford, am married, have kids.

But in my head there's a whole world that I can explore,

These feelings are something we take for granted.

These sensations let me know I am alive, that I am me.

We don't have an equation that explains consciousness.

I can't remember when I first became aware of being me.

But I watched it happen to my son.

To address that very question,

I've come to Portsmouth University

to watch a well-established experiment

known as the mirror self-recognition test.

When we make sure the child has actually seen himself or herself

in the mirror for at least a few seconds -

made eye contact with itself -

and basically I am going to ask her

to take a tissue and pretend to be wiping the child's nose

Basically what we are looking for is
