there's been something missing.

After one battle, it was suddenly
much easier for the English to feel

that God had abandoned them.

And a century later,
in public at least,

the English have
largely abandoned God.

The English still have the sense
of being a people so special

that they feel duty bound
to set an example to the world.

left the building.

I'm astonished at how enduring
this myth has been.

The English aren't the only nation to
have believed they're chosen by God,

but they believed it the longest
and with the most passion.

It's an idea that outlasted
the Somme, the end of the Empire,

the emptying of the pews.
