We’re on a massive ocean,but no sign of life.

Not gonna lie, I'm starting to get a little bit concerned.

We’ve spent a lot of time,and we’ve searched a massive area.

But with that said, while we’re moving,the dolphins are also a moving target,

so they might very well be in a place that we’ve already searched,
只是我们没有拦截到它们
we just didn’t intercept them.

BERTIE: We’ve checked the charts,and set our course,

for another underwater canyon where ocean currents

should force dolphin food to the surface.

But we haven’t seen a single spinner,let alone a super pod.

Our morale needs a boost.
终于发现了一群宽吻海豚
And it finally arrives in the form of bottlenose dolphins.
它们利用我们船头的浪加速
They’re using the bow wave of our boat to speed themselves along.
节省它们的体力 也给我们希望
It saves them energy and gives us hope.
如果它们在这里找到食物
If they’ve found food here,
我们就有机会找到长吻飞旋海豚
there’s a chance we’ll find the spinners too.
我们刚碰上一大群海豚
We've just bumped into a big group of dolphins.
柏提 怎么样？
JOHNNY: Bertie!Yeah?
领航鲸就在前面 领航鲸？
JOHNNY: Pilot whales right in front.Pilot whales?
对 还有海豚…在哪里？
JOHNNY: Yeah. With the dolphins...Where?

JOHNNY: ...right on the bow.

Oh man, no way.

Okay. Things just got very interesting.
主海豚群在三点钟方向 柏提
The main pod of dolphin are about three o’clock, Bertie,
我们还有两只领航鲸
we’ve still got a couple of pilot whales here.
真是疯了
(GROANS) Crazy.
不只两只
We’ve got more than just a couple.
从无人机上看至少有30只
I can see at least thirty from the drone.
领航鲸也是海豚的一种
BERTIE: Pilot whales are a type of dolphin too.
但它们在三千英呎的深海觅食
But they hunt in the deep sea up to three thousand feet down.
对它们来说寻找食物非常困难
Finding food is incredibly hard work for them.

They must be hanging out up here to rest and catch their breath.

That’s given the bottlenose dolphins...a chance to mingle.

That is extraordinary,it looks like they're playing a game of chase.

I don’t know if that’s ever been recorded before.

JOHNNY: They’re having a great time.

BERTIE: Ah! Front flip!
有些海豚会欺负鼠海豚 甚至霸凌鲸鱼
BERTIE: Some dolphins will harass porpoises, even bully whales,
但这里没有敌意
but there’s no animosity here.
看起来只是玩得很开心
It just looks like just good old-fashioned fun.
就算领航鲸有河马那么重
Even though pilot whales can weigh as much as a hippo,
它们看到潜水员还是会紧张
they’re nervous with divers.
所以下水跟它们在一起时要特别小心
So, I’ve got to tread carefully when I get in the water with them.
我们要很慢 引擎保持低速
We’re going in really slow,keeping the engine really low revs,
因为它们有时候很害羞
because they can be really shy.
不管我们做什么都要尽可能保持安静
So, everything we're gonna be doing has got to be as quiet as possible.

Gonna slip in the water without making any splash,

so hopefully they want to hang out.

BERTIE: Having the bottlenose here could work in my favor.

If they’re cool with me around,it’ll put the pilot whales at ease.

Some are just hanging out in this big blue void,

like massive airships.

Others are still chilling with the dolphins.

I wonder if this is more than play.

They’re touching each other.

That's how dolphins strengthen their bonds.

Is it possible these guys have been friends for years?
跟领航鲸分享这样亲密的片刻 真是太棒了
It’s amazing to share such an intimate moment with pilot whales.
它们很快就会潜入深海继续觅食
They'll soon zoom back down into the deep to continue hunting.
但现在看起来这些鲸鱼 有重要的事情要做
Right now though, it looks like there’s other important whale business.
从动物的排泄物 可以了解很多它们的饮食
You can learn a lot about an animal’s diet by looking at its poo....
领航鲸的排泄物很多
And pilot whales make rather a lot of it.

I’m gonna check out my findings and prepare for another dive.
最有趣的是其中一只鲸鱼
Well, the most fun part of that was one of the whales
在我面前大了一堆 我直接游进它的排泄物
did a huge poo right in my face and I swam right into it.
它们的排泄物里有很多这些东西 这是乌贼喙
And full of the poo were these.It’s a squid beak.

It’s right in the mouth of the squid.

There’s none of those guys at the surface right now.

They’re all super deep.

So these pilot whale are diving super deep,

eating the squid and coming back to the surface to breathe.

BERTIE:With calm seas and calm whales,

BERTIE: It used to be thought that the pod was piloted by a single leader,
所以才有这个名字
hence their name....
现在我们知道并非如此 但它们家庭关系非常密切
We now know that’s not true,but there is a strong family bond
藉此凝聚鲸鱼群
that keeps the pod together.
(MUSIC CONTINUES)

BERTIE: There’s one whale that stands out though, an adult female.

I think she’s scoping me out, checking that I’m harmless.
但感觉像它看进我的灵魂
But it feels like she’s looking into my soul.

This whale family seems to trust me.

As maybe the ultimate honor,

they’re falling asleep in front of my eyes.

They are mind-blowing.

It’s like being a pilot whale.

The biggest one, I think she was a female, came right over.

And I could see her eye,just checking me out, twitching around.

And we just had this moment and I’ve never seen anything like that.

BERTIE: Those pilot whales were a huge bonus,but we’re running out of time

It feels like the ocean is taunting us.
我考虑把这根棒子黏在我身上
I’m considering just permanently attaching this pole to my body,

so I don’t even have to use my hands.Jump again please, Mr. or Mrs. Dolphin.

It’s a common dolphin.
一天大概有三到四次 看到海豚
About three or four times a day,we all get very excited
我们就会很兴奋
because we see dolphins.
但很可惜的是看到海豚虽然很棒
But then unfortunately,whilst it’s always cool to see a dolphin,
但它们不是我们要找的
they turn out to be the wrong ones.
真海豚跳得更高
Common dolphins, they jump much higher.
因为它们跳很高 所以从很远的地方
They do these big leaps so you can actually tell
就能知道是不是真海豚
from a really long way away if it’s a common dolphin
长吻飞旋海豚则不一样 另一个辨别的方法
as opposed to a spinner.The other way to tell,
就是真海豚跳起来时
the common dolphins,if they jump and they show you
露出腹部
their belly,
如果腹部是白色就知道是真海豚
