As the celebrations begin,

We had heard of a group of Jewish women

who had been dumped by their SS guards in a vacant factory building.

And because I was German speaking,

I was sent in together with a jeep of medics.

A couple of days earlier, the Germans locked us into the factory

and they attached a time bomb.

But it started to rain.

So, the bombing timer did not connect.

And the following morning, the doors were opened
有人说战争结束了
and people called and said the war was over.

A very clear view of liberation came that morning
因为我看到一辆车从山丘下来
when I saw a car coming down the hill,
车头漆着白色星星 而不是万字旗
the white star on its hood and not the swastika.

And I remember that next to the entrance of the building, I saw a girl standing.
我决定走向她
And I decided to walk up to her.
然后我用德语和英语问她
And I asked her in German and in English
她会不会说这两种语言
whether she spoke either language,

and she answered me in German.
我跟他说 我们是犹太人
And I said to him, "We are Jewish, you know?"
他停顿了很久 没回答
For a very long time he didn't answer me.
然后他的声音再也掩饰不了情绪
And then his own voice betrayed his emotion.
他说：“我也是”
He said, "So am I."
我记得我“喔”了一声
I remember I said, "Oh!"
简直不敢相信
Of disbelief.
他看起来就像上帝
He looked like God to me.
解救我的不仅是美国人 而且是犹太同胞
And the impact of that, to be liberated not only by an American,

but by a fellow Jew…
那实在是…
it just, it was so totally…

I mean, I think this is when that…
我整个人充满了喜悦
that feeling of such an incredible joy which fills your whole being,

it must have burst out.
我记得我根本克制不住自己
I remember I couldn't get ahold of myself.

And then he asked a strange question.
他说：“我可以见见其他女士吗 ”
He said, "May I see the other ladies?"
我们已经六年没有听到这种称呼
A form of address we hadn't heard for six years.
我跟他说大部分女孩都在里面 但她们虚弱到无法走路
I told him that most of the girls were inside but too ill to walk.
然后他说：“不如你跟我去吧 ”
And he said to me, "Won't you come with me?"
他帮我开门 让我带领他
He held the door open for me and let me proceed him.
我几乎无法形容在里头看到的景象
It's nearly impossible to describe the scene that I found inside
这些女人四处倒在地上
with all these women scattered on the floor.
那景象实在太惨不忍♥睹
That was simply too overwhelming.
她指着她们 然后朝着这个
She pointed at them and then made sort of a sweeping gesture
惨烈的景象比了个手势
over this scene of devastation

and said the following words:
“人是高贵
"Noble be man,

merciful and good."
我难以相信她竟然还能引述
And I could hardly believe that she was able to summon a poem

by the German poet Goethe, called "The Divine," at such a moment.
那令我震惊无比
It was a totally shattering experience for me.
不久之后红十字会的卡车就来了
Well, pretty soon trucks came, Red Cross trucks.
他们把我们送去医院
They took us into hospital.
我们家只有我一个人存活
I was the only one from my family who survived.
我永远忘不了 这个女孩给我留下的印象
I've never forgotten the impression that this girl had made on me,
我也努力尽量常回医院探视
and I made it my business to come back to the hospital as often as I could.

The more I talked to her,

the more I realized she had something very special about her.

So, from that point on, a relationship developed.

Kurt came as often as he could,

And he said, "For starters, you could marry me."

And that was the happiest moment of my life.

I was so shocked by what I saw that it just knocked me over.
经历这种事的时候
When you're in the middle of an experience of that kind,

it's sort of like a nightmare.

It was beyond the realm of one's imagination.
