This reality is much more than what we see around us in our everyday life.
各式各样的地面与太空望远镜 拓展了我们的感官
A vast array of ground and space telescopes have extended our senses.
让我们探望遥远的太空
Allowing us to see deep into space...
并建造前所未有的更大的模型
And build a much bigger model than ever before.
当我们更进一步探望宇宙时
As we peer further and further into the cosmos...
我们认知中的现实世界拓展得愈来愈大
our reality has grown bigger and bigger still...
人类曾经以为是天堂地面裂缝的东西
where once we saw a chink in heaven's flow...
我们现在知道那是遥远的恒星 就和太阳一样
We now see distant stars like our sun.
很多都有自己的行星与卫星
Many with their own planets and moons.
后来我们发现遥远的星系
Then we discovered distant galaxies,
那里又有超过数十亿颗其它恒星
home to billions more stars.
我们回顾过去
We have peered back in time.
一直到宇宙自身的起源
All the way to the birth of the universe itself.
这一切 这整段137亿年的宇宙历史
All this,the entire 13.7 billion year history of the universe...
都存在于我们心中的模型
exists as a model inside our minds.
那么我们该如何找出生命的意义呢？
So where does this leave us with finding a meaning to life?
我认为答案非常清楚
The answer,I think,is pretty clear.
意义本身不过就是
Meaning itself is simply another piece of the model of reality...
每个人在大脑里建构的现实模型其中的一部分
that we each built inside our own brains.
举这位母亲和小孩为例
Take this mother and child.
他们各自在意识中建构自己所认知的现实世界
They each create their own little bubbles of reality in their conscious minds.
小孩能建立周遭环境
The youngster,can create a detailed mental model
详细的心智模型
of his surroundings.
但他可能无法完全体认 自己其实是在五楼
Even though he may not fully appreciate the fact he's on the fifth floor.
母亲认知中的现实也来自于她的意识
The mother's reality is also produced by her mind.
对她而言 她对儿子的爱 就如手中拿的电♥话♥一样真实
And for her,her love for her boy is as real as the telephone in her hand.
简言之 大脑不只是掌管我们感知的现实情况
In short: the brain is responsible for not only the reality we perceive...
还包括我们的情绪和意义
but for our emotions and meaning,too.
爱情与荣耀 对与错
Love and honor,right and wrong...
都是我们心中建立的宇宙的一部分
are part of the universe we create in our minds
就像一张桌子 一颗星球 或者一个星系
just as a table,a planet or a galaxy.
很难想象 我们的大脑
It's pretty remarkable to think that our brains...
基本上就是依据物理定律运作的众多粒子
which are essentially a collection of particles working to the laws of physics...
竟拥有这种奇妙的能力 不仅能感知现实世界
have this wonderful ability to not only perceive reality...
更能赋予它意义
but to give it meaning,too.
生命的意义为何 全由你来选择
The meaning of life is what you choose it to be.
个人来说 我很乐意 我们每一个人都赋予宇宙意义
Personally,I like to think that it is everyone of us that gives meaning to the universe.
我们是 如宇宙学家卡尔·萨根所说
We are,as cosmologist Carl Sagan once said:
我们是宇宙对自己的省思
The universe contemplating itself.
意义只能存在于人类心智的架构内
Meaning can only ever exist within the confines of the human mind.
如此一来 生命的意义就不在外面某处
And in this way,the meaning of life is not somewhere out there...
而是在我们的脑海里
but right between our ears.
就许多方面来说 我们也因此成了万物之灵
In many ways,this makes us The Lords of Creation.
