Each flower lasts just one day and the scent attracts insects from all over the forest.

Including female orchid bees.

Nectar hides beneath a specially adapted petal.

Only female orchid bees are big and strong enough to pry open the petal and pollinate the flower.

This honey bee doesn't have the strength to unlock the flowers.

Without a variety of orchids, the orchid bees don't survive.

With nothing to pollinate the brazil nut flowers very few nuts can be produced.

So virtually all brazil nuts come from wild rainforest ecosystems.
