欢迎来到一个独一无二的国家
Welcome to a country like none other,
她长久以来独行其道
one that for so long has gone its own way,
拥有独特古老传统
with its own ancient traditions,
但却已经蓄势待发
but which is now ready.
她已做好一切准备
Ready for anything.
中国或许已数千岁 可是...
China may be thousands of years old, but...
感觉仍旧年轻非凡
It kind of feels quite young.
这里蕴藏着一种能量 一种拥抱世界的热情
There is an energy here, an enthusiasm to welcome the world,
向世界展示它的成就
and also show the world what it's got.
而它的成就
And what it's got
并不只是批量造出消费品的工厂
is not just factories churning out other people's stuff.
中国品牌自身也开始爆发
The Chinese brands themselves are starting to break out.
"中国制♥造♥"正变成"中国设计"
"Made in China" is becoming "Designed in China."
然而这里生活的一些部分
Yet there are some parts of life here
你可能觉得无法接受
that you may consider unpalatable.
它不尊重人♥权♥ 它控制媒体
Its take on human rights, its control of the media,
它企图将"不宜"信息屏蔽在"防火长城"之外
its attempts to censor inconvenient information behind that Great Firewall.
从脸书 推特到极具实力的苹果公♥司♥
From Facebook and Twitter to the mighty Apple,
西方品牌在此不受待见
western brands are not given an easy ride here,
尽管这种审查并不彻底
although it is not blanket censorship,
民众仍可以绕过防火墙
and people can and do circumvent it.
但这种对西方企业入侵的抵♥制♥
But that buffer from the Western invasion
也给中国的创新繁荣以空间
has allowed Chinese innovation to flourish,
而这 也正是我们想要探究的
and that is what we are here to discover.

Let's start with lunch, which on one day looked like this,

but on other days was consumed on the go, and brought to us

Yet, today in Beijing we are ordering a delivery

from a local restaurant using WeChat,

the social network of China.

It is a full-on, multipurpose tool.
想像一下推特 WhatsApp和脸书的综合体
Think of a mix between Twitter, WhatsApp and Facebook.

You can do business, you can have fun.

Yes, China is trying to go big on innovation.
它有超过1600个孵化器 包括看起来非常出色
It has over 1,600 accelerators, including the rather nice looking

Innovation Works, founded by the head of Google China, Kaifu Lee.

There is a wall here of the billion-dollar projects they have backed,

But they don't just have accelerators in Beijing.

They have a whole startup street, called Innoway.
大街上有许许多多的创业咖啡厅
And it has many, many startup cafes.
每个咖啡厅楼上有孵化器 而孵化器楼上
Above each cafe an incubator, and above each of those,
是给创业企业免♥费♥使♥用♥三个月的工作区
working space for new companies, which is free for three months.
我便是在此遇见了吴甘沙
And it is here that I met Gansha Wu,
他的创业公♥司♥ 驭势科技 被认为
whose own start-up, UISEE is being talked about
拥有颠覆汽车行业的潜力
as potentially revolutionising the autonomous car industry.

在中国 情况有些特殊
In China, the situation is a little bit different.
当政♥府♥推进某项产业发展
When the government tries to push something,
它通常就会得到足够关注
it typically gets enough attention,
足够的资源 足够的力量
enough resources, enough forces.
所以在中国 你总能看到
So in China, you know, you always see
所有人都在朝同一方向努力
everyone go in the same direction.
这样有好 也有坏
It is good, it is bad.
但有时这种环境下 所有人都投入到
But sometimes, at this point, everyone goes into this
大规模的创业创新里
mass entrepreneurship and innovation.
我觉得这是有益的
I think it helps.
但在创业大街逛一圈
But walking around Innoway,
这股创业风似乎还没那么盛行
it doesn't really look like there is that much take-up yet.

Still, if you are really successful,

They really want to understand people's behaviour in their space,

And it is more than just behaviour that is being monitored here.

DeepGlint supplies facial recognition systems that can pick

out hundreds of places at once, and even identify stolen cars,

not by their number plates, which may have been changed,

Of course, it is not just in Beijing that you find innovation

They are happening all over this vast country.

to Chengdu, where something very strange is going on.

Yes, I have travelled to the heart of China's Sichuan Province,

to the provincial capital, Chengdu.

It is famous for its pandas and mahjong.

There are even electrical tables in the countryside.

I am playing mahjong, I think.

And it is now building a reputation for hi-tech too.

The University for Engineering, Science and Technology is one

of the best in the country for robotics.

There are 35,000 students here, from all over China.
